Severe weather impact on public health and economics

This article tries to find the impact of severe weather conditions, for instance storms, on general public at large. It also tries to answer the economic consequence of such severe weather conditions. The dataset used for the analysis is from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) storm database and the events in the database start in the year 1950 and end in November 2011.

Data Processing

The dataset was download using the download.file function and read subsequently using read.csv. read.csv was passed the bz2 zipped file as it can handle reading directly from bz2/zipped files.Running summary and str on the storm dataset suggests that “EVTYPE” is the factor as we want to examine impact caused by it and needs some scrubbing as it has spaces.

Results

Let us try to analyse the impact of various events on public health. On examining the dataset it is evident that the FATALITIES and INJURIES can help in this regard. Lets us draw a plot depicting the relationship between aggregated FATALITIES and INJURIES caused by specific events. However, there are 977 different event types and we are interested in knowing the events types that cause maximum damage to public health so we will just plot the top 5 events.

injByEvents <- aggregate(INJURIES ~ EVTYPE, data = stormData, sum)
fatByEvents <- aggregate(FATALITIES ~ EVTYPE, data = stormData, sum)
injFatByEvent <- injByEvents
injFatByEvent$FATALITIES <- fatByEvents$FATALITIES
ordInjFatByEvents <- injFatByEvent[ order(
    injFatByEvent$INJURIES, injFatByEvent$FATALITIES), ]
top5OrdInjFatByEvents <- tail(ordInjFatByEvents, 5)
library(ggplot2)
qplot(INJURIES, FATALITIES , data = top5OrdInjFatByEvents, color = EVTYPE, main = "Injuries and Fatalities caused by Top 5 Events" )

As can be seen from the plot above, Tornado is the most harmful event causing maximum harm to public health

Next we analyse the econimic consequences of the various event types. PROPDMG and CROPDMG variables in the storm dataset can help us in this.

propByEvents <- aggregate(PROPDMG ~ EVTYPE, data = stormData, sum)
cropByEvents <- aggregate(CROPDMG ~ EVTYPE, data = stormData, sum)
propCropByEvents <- propByEvents
propCropByEvents$CROPDMG <- cropByEvents$CROPDMG/1000
propCropByEvents$PROPDMG <- propCropByEvents$PROPDMG/1000
ordPropCropByEvents <- propCropByEvents[order(propCropByEvents$PROPDMG, propCropByEvents$CROPDMG), ]
top5OrdPropCropByEvents <- tail(ordPropCropByEvents, 10)

qplot(PROPDMG, CROPDMG, data = top5OrdPropCropByEvents, color = EVTYPE, main = "Property and cropy damages caused by Top 5 Events", xlab = "Property Damages(K)", ylab = "Crop Damages(K)")

So it can be seen that Hail has caused the maximum crop damages and Tornado the maximum property damages.
