The Guiding Hand of a Mentor

There are moments in life when a student crosses paths with a professor, mentor, or teacher who recognizes their potential more clearly than they do themselves. These remarkable individuals become unwavering sources of encouragement, inspiring growth that shapes a student’s path in profound ways, leaving a lasting imprint on their life.

A few years ago, I found myself standing at a crossroads, contemplating the next phase of my career. I decided to pursue a quest for personal growth instead - by taking a journey back to college and discovering a path in the field of Data Science. I recall that first day at Chaminade University when the unfamiliarity of the campus triggered my imposter syndrome and self-doubt. I feared not being able to bridge the generation gap with other students or master programming languages. However, all that anxiety melted away the moment I stepped into my first class taught by Dr. Rylan Chong.

Dr. Chong does more than share new knowledge; he inspires, challenges, and guides his students. I truly believe exceptional teaching surpasses the boundaries of lecture hall or classroom. It is not merely about delivering content but about igniting the spark of students’ joy in learning new things, fostering critical thinking by aligning expectations with each student’s potential, and empowering students to pursue their passions.

What makes Dr. Chong a truly exceptional professor?

It is his unique ability to connect with his students on a personal level while upholding a rigorous academic standard. He fosters a classroom atmosphere where students feel at ease asking any questions, exploring complex programming concepts together, and even transforming the typically groggy early-morning classes – often dreaded by college students – into lively, laughter-filled classes within fifteen minutes. His knack of kicking off lectures with icebreaker games effortlessly shifts everyone into an engaged, learning-focused mindset. With his remarkable gift for persuasion – capable of “selling ice to an Eskimo” - Dr. Chong masterfully encourages his students to embrace learning with enthusiasm.

These moments have stayed with me and will become cherished memories that I will forever treasure, thanks to Dr. Chong’s ability to advocate for his students with care and dedication. As the saying goes, “A great professor does not only prepare students for exams; they equip them for the challenges of life”. These are the lessons that leave a lasting impact that extends far beyond the classroom.
