Right after the manipulation, participants were told:

Try to picture yourself in this workplace. Imagine being in this environment day after day, relating to coworkers in this way.

In the space below, please write 2-3 sentences about how you would act (competitively or cooperatively) toward your coworkers in this workplace environment. Try to think of one or more specific behaviors you might do.

PID cond reflection
1 low When working in an environment that is supportive and honest I would work accordingly as well. I would work collaboratively and for the good of the the team not just myself.
2 low I feel like it would be a refreshing setting to have all workers get along. I believe we perform better at work when all of us arent busy trying to tear eachother down
3 high I think I’d act cooperatively. I would prefer to work with others so we get ahead. I don Fancy bitter competition
4 high I would keep my friends close and my enemies closer. I think I would feel on edge around everyone and not feel like I can trust coworkers. It seems like this company is too competitive and lacking comradery.
5 high Being in this type of workplace would be very tiresome. I would have to be on edge all of time. I wouldn’t exactly know who I could trust either. This would get old very quickly.
6 low In this type of environment I would feel compelled to share my opinions and to listen to the opinions of others. Everything I do and everything everyone else does is connected. To work as a team means to help others when it is needed, so that is what I would do.
7 low I would try to be cooperative and pass along helpful information to other workers. I would point out new information to co-workers when I learn about it. I would be calm and work hard and try to create a positive environment for everyone.
8 high I would need to leave my own lane and embrace uncomfortable situations in order to get ahead. I would have to be loud and proud about my accomplishments in front of prominent people.
9 high In a workplace like this, I’d stay focused on my work and be careful about who I trust. I’d try to stay professional and strategic, making sure I protect myself without stepping on others. If competition is unavoidable, I’d play smart but fair, keeping my integrity intact.
10 low i feellike every workplace is somewhat competive, and i would look for a competive edge so i could be promoted.
11 high I would do my job the best that I could. I would rather not manipulate anyone, and let me morals and work speak for themselves.
12 low In this environment, I would try to mimic the culture by being supportive and kind to people. I would work with others well and try to help the team achieve success.
13 high I would play the game and try and do everything in my power to make myself the most successful. That includes stepping on others and doing what I have to do to be the best. At the same token, the stress and anxiety of this would get to me very quickly and I’d be working very hard to find a new organization to work for.
14 low I would act cooperatively in this workplace environment. I may go out of my way to help my coworkers. I would enjoy working here and not find it a hassle to be kind.
15 high If I was in that environment, I might try to steal ideas from others to make myself look better. I would also go out of my way to make myself look better in front of management, even if they are actions I would not normally do.
16 low I would not feel like I need to act competitively. I would feel content and respected in a role like this with coworkers who are this way.
17 high I would still try to be as cooperative as possible, but because of the environment I would likely hold onto helpful information more than I should. Even in a cutthroat environment, I wouldn’t feel right backstabbing and stepping on others to get ahead. I’ve found that if you do the right thing most of the time, you will be rewarded for making good choiced.
18 high I don’t think I would be a good fit for a place like this. This type of environment would not be cohesive to good mental health. I would not trust anyone there, and most likely keep to myself as I tried to fly under the radar.
19 high I would be completely competitive and only thinking of myself in this kind of work environment. I would do what is necessary to get ahead, even if it means putting others in disadvantageous positions in order to put myself in a better spot.
20 low I would try to be helpful and supportive to my team. Assist when possible, help brain storm ideas, and collaborate as needed.
21 high If I worked here, I would be on guard around those around me. It seems like a very competitive work environment. Sales would be my guess. I would try and outsell my peers, and thicken my skin. Nothing personal, just business.
22 low I would be more willing to help my coworkers who ask for assistance, if I knew that the help would be reciprocated whenever I needed it. I would feel like a valued member of the team, and work to cooperate with and support my fellow coworkers.
23 high I would act both competitively and cooperatively depending on the situation, at first I would be polite and cooperate with everyone, after a while, and after observing how everyone acts, I would be competitive since it is a way for me to succeed and get ahead since it has to do with my earnings.
24 low In this workplace, I would be friendly, respectful, and open. I would seek out others advice and opinions on work projects, connect with them one on one, and attend any work social events that may occur.
25 low This sounds very much like my own workplace. We all seem to trust each other and are not afraid to speak up and offer suggestions. There is always help available when someone needs it and no one hesitates to ask for it. We work well together and have fun. We are the type of team who would hang out outside of work.
26 high I would first try to find a new job. Otherwise, I would stick to myself to try to do my job efficiently.
27 low i would try to help out my coworkers as much as i could. i would ask them what i could do to help them, and try and pull my own weight as much as possible
28 high It’s a rough go, I would consider alternatives within the same job description or use my expertise to pivot to something less toxic.
29 high I would probably act cooperatively since I am not a competitive person by nature. I really just want to make a livable salary and go on vacation once in a while without the stress of having to worry about competition doing something I already don’t enjoy.
30 low In this situation I wouldn’t be more open to my coworkers. I would be willing to help out and I would be more sociable with them. I think it would be a great environment and it would feel like I am working with friends.
31 high I would try to keep to myself and keep conversations with coworkres surface level. I would be very private and not speak about my personal life. I would not speak about work goals or projects in fear that people would manipulate their way ahead of me.
32 low in this kind of environment and workplace i will always try to do my best , provide my best service and enhance the environment i love spirits like this
33 high If I wanted to get ahead I would be very dedicated, determined, and have unparalleled effort. I would excel if I wanted to advance, as I am a competitive person and enjoy competition. I would win, however I am not typically this way. I do not have a desire to step on others to get ahead. I prefer to advance by preforming at a high level without being manipulative.
34 low In this workplace I would be comfortable recognizing my strengths and growth opportunities. I’d be comfortable reaching out to my team members if I need support on projects.
35 low I would make myself available for my co workers. I would emphasize being supportive and would make myself a team player.
36 low In this workplace environment, I would act cooperatively by offering help. as well as knowledge with my coworkers who are in need. I believe in fostering a strong and uplifting work community.
37 low In this work environment, I would work cooperatively with my coworkers. I would constantly be in communication with them if I needed help with tasks since we would work as a team rather than working individually. It would be a great place to work as everybody is there to get the job done since we’re working as a team.
38 low I would feel good about working here. I would be happy to work with my coworkers. I would be happy to cooperate with them.
39 high This is the exact opposite of the type of environment I would thrive in. I’m a cooperative person by nature, and it would be difficult to behave in the way expected. I would most likely close myself off to helping others or receiving help from others and do my best to keep to myself both socially and professionally. Honestly, I would probably not last long in this environment and would tender my resignation as soon as I found a place that was more suited to my personality type.
40 high This is not my type of environment at all. If I found myself with this employer I would try to cooperate rather than compete against my colleagues. To me working together has much more positive outcome possibilities than a contentious competitive work environment
41 high In this scenario, I would attempt to befriend others and act cooperatively. If/when I get betrayed is when I would do my own competitive tactics. I would try to create tension between others and play both sides.
42 high I had a pretty rough day, every deadline that I had to meet wasn’t achieved. My supervisor kept breathing down my neck and all I could think of was just going home.
43 high I believe I would have to treat others unfairly in an environment like this. I would spend more time worrying about myself and likely be less cooperative than my instinct typically makes me be. I would be more competitive in all of my daily duties and work hard to prove myself.
44 high I think this type of workplace would be extremely difficult to work at for a long period of time for me personally. I would more than like not become cutthroat or manipulate anyone else in order to get ahead. I would probably just do my work and keep my head down, and look for another job in order to get out of the toxic work environment.
45 high I would try and get to know them and how they work. This would give me an advantage into how i can surpass them or work better than them.
46 low I would enjoy working in this type of environment and I would reach out to my coworkers for assistance as needed. I would also collaborate with and offer them any help that I am able to.
47 low I would act cooperatively towards my coworkers - this is the kind of environment I work well in. I enjoy collaborating on creative problem-solving and ideation. I would look forward to going to work.
48 high If I worked in this workplace, I would probably try to do the minimum to get by and not be noticed until I could find a new job. I am not interested in having to compete with my coworkers, and the environment of this workplace sounds really toxic. I would probably cooperate with my coworkers in the meantime and help them with tasks, so not to cause any trouble.
49 low I would try to behave cooperatively with my coworkers. I think that this would be the most effective way to work with my fellow employees.
50 high I would start as a mix of competitive and cooperative until I felt like my trust was broken by someone. Once that happens, I will be much more selfish and do what I have to to stay ahead
51 low I would thrive in a supportive work environment where I can also show that I can contribute to the workload. I feel that I’d be able to speak up with any ideas I have as it sounds like its an open-minded workplace.
52 high I don’t think I would like working there. I would try to ignore everyone and do the best job I could in the situation.
53 low In this supportive and cooperative workplace environment, I would act very collaboratively toward my coworkers.
54 high I would try to stay away from coworkers and keep my projects private. In such a cutthroat environment I wouldn’t want to be a victim of any wrongdoing. I would also be cautious of my work being stolen. So closed off and cautious would be my behavior and feelings towards this situation.
55 high Based on the description, I would maintain my character and integrity to show kindness and helpfulness to those around me. However, I would also be strategic when making alliances. I would ensure my best interests are always central to my actions and interactions.
56 low In a friendly and cooperative workplace like this, I would focus on working well with others and share ideas and resources
57 low in this workplace, i would act cooperatively towards my coworkers, prioritizing teamwork and mutual support. I would actively share knowledge and resources, offer help when colleagues face challenges, and openly communicate to ensure projects run smoothly.
58 low I would follow the consensus and support being cooperative rather than competitive. It seems like a good environment to work in and a good atmosphere for comeraderie.
59 high Well since this is a competitive environment I would have to step on toes to get ahead. I would have to make sure that I was getting all my word done and talking on new assignments to show up all the others that I work with. I would have to use my wit and charm to manipulate others to help me when needed.
60 low Such workplaces is normally where I hope to work. I will be very open to anybody who needs my help, and I will also assist anyone who needs my help.
61 high I think its important that when you are in an environment such as the one above, you act with kindness. One can be competitive and still have compassion towards others. Would others act the same though?
62 low I would act cooperatively towards my coworkers in this workplace environment. I would prioritize honesty, transparency, and collaboration. I would feel inclined to help my coworkers since this is rewarded in the workplace culture here.
63 high First and foremost, don’t trust anybody. Keep your mouth as shut as much as possible and your ears open. Once you are able to do that, only one person matters at work and that is yourself.
64 low I would feel like part of a team and would contribute and collaborate as such. I would promote the teamwork and be actively involved
65 low This would be a great work environment to be in. It allows others support when needed, but also would help people feel like they are capable on their own as well. Having trust with your coworkers and a team mentality are essential to a great workplace.
66 high I think I would try to strike a balance between good competition, but also respect and care for my colleagues. I don’t like environments that are too cutthroat. I don’t find it productive in the long run. I think the business will be better off if people could down a little bit, and I will try to facilitate this if I can. I know it will be challenging but I will try.
67 low If I worked in this environments, I would be collaborative and will I have a on teamwork to get us through projects. It’s not that often in my eyes that you find a collaborative team, enriched coworkers that are willing to come together for a common goal.
68 low I love being part of cooperative teams. So much can be accomplished when everyone is pulling together for the same cause. I would work to help and propel the team. I would make myself available to shoulder the work load for others when they need.
69 low I would make sure I am aware of my coworker’s responsibilities and needs in a project and that we are both on the same page when it comes to our duties. I would make sure that we both know we can count on each other as we work together and that, if anything goes wrong, that we work productively and constructively with each other. For example, I would always focus on productive troubleshooting if certain things fail instead of blaming my coworker. There is no room for ego and I’d make to sure to live by that and that my coworker does the same.
70 high I would be very cautious in in this environment. It seems that there is little trust and a lot of “throat cutting.” I would work cooperatively until I experienced pour behavior. After seeing it with my own eyes I would definitely be careful of the “wolves”
71 low This is the kind of place I would thrive in. I enjoy a place where there is honesty and support for each other. I think my favorite thing to do would be to celebrate when someone has really outdone themselves.
72 low Working in a space with employees who are supportive and honest is really encouraging. The honest and integrity vibe would pass on to all employees in the department, making the work environment and morale better. When everyone is working toward a common goal with no bad intentions, great things can happen.
73 low I feel like this place would be great to work at. I genuinely envy this person because they are in an environment which I would love to work at.
74 high I would go to work and keep to myself and not share any ideas with anybody ever. I would work my hardest to observe others while I do my work, to see if I could take any of their ideas and incorporate them into my own so that I could have the best outcomes on my projects. I feel like I would go home mentally exhausted after doing that every day.
75 low In this environment, I would act cooperatively. If I didn’t, I would anticipate the workplace culture changing and I would not seem like a team player. If I work as a team, we will continue to have a supporting relationship. If getting ahead means being willing to collaborate, then I would not want to be competitive.
76 high In this kind of environment i would look for people who have the same mindset as me or the same goals in different department so we do not compete against one another whilst still helping each other get to the top. They would be my eyes and ear so would i for them and we will have strategy and plans on how to get ahead of everyone else without hurting anyone of cause. These people will be part of my team and we will get to bounce ideas of one another to make the best of our environment.
77 high I don’t think that I would make it in this type of workplace. I have never worked somewhere like that and I don’t even know how I would act. I guess if I had to say, I would try to look out for myself because my family is the most important and I would need the job.
78 low I would be considerate and open minded to new ideas. It seems that everyone is on the same page of working together to better help each other.
79 high If I were in this workplace, I would probably just keep to myself and worry only about myself while probably updating my job application to look for another job elsewhere. I’m not a person who’s interested in the rat race or trying to get ahead of others, I’m just someone who wants to do my job and get paid enough to get by. If people are going to be untrustworthy, then I would rather not have to interact with them at all if given the opportunity, especially since I’m a diligent enough worker that I can handle most projects on my own.
80 high My response would be to start looking for another job Immediately! I can only imagine how horrible this type of environment would be to deal with on a daily basis, life is way too short to put up with something such as this!
81 low My current work is like this statement. I am willing to help others and other help me tremendously. We can count on each other and make sure we are all taken care of.
82 low In an environment such as the one described, I would be delighted to take a similarly collaborative approach, just like everyone else. I’ve never worked in a non competitive environment, so it could take some getting used to, but it sounds absolutely lovely. I would probably try to bring donuts or a fruit platter my first day to show warmth.
83 high I think I would be very stand-offish toward my co-workers because I would assume they are all waiting and wanting me to fail. I wouldn’t be very trusting or keen to build new relationships. I may try and find a single person to commiserate with, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to try and make friends with the masses. I’d probably be constantly looking for a new job, too.
84 high In such a highly competitive environment, I would probably take on a more assertive approach, prioritizing my own progress. I’d build strategic connections, collaborate with influential figures, and emphasize my achievement to gain recognition.
85 low I would act cooperatively if my workplace were like the one described. I would feel generous towards my colleagues and I assume they would feel generous towards me as well. I would feel good about collaborating on shared products and sharing information to help the team advance.
86 high I would probably keep my head down a bit. I do not like this kind of workplace, so I would find others that were more cooperative with me.
87 low I would be honest with my team mates and do everything I can to help them. I’d show up to work on time and do my fair share of the workload,
88 high I think that I would find this work place exhausting. I do not thrive in a competitive work environment so I think I would attempt to cooperate with my coworkers in an attempt to be less of a target for manipulation. I would try to be helpful to anyone I found to be particularly competitive or manipulative so that I did not become a target.
89 high this feels like an extremely stressful and uncomfortable workplace to be a part of. While it may be competitive I believe that the best course of action is to try to show some level of cooperation with others as it will allow you to try to build a bit of a relationship with others but will also allow you to better understand what is going on around you. It would be helpful to know what projects are coming up, who is working on what and who might be the most aggressive or uncooperative person at work. I believe I would try to focus hard on my own tasks and doing the best job I could do but keeping those co-workers close and building some level of relationship will be critical to staying ahead of what might be coming.
90 low I always find it better to work cooperatively with my coworkers. In my experience more gets done working together compared to competing with each other. This method also benefits both side in that both parties learn more and grow from each others experience and expertise. Having said that I am in a leadership position with my company so I also don’t need to be competitive since I’m already towards the top
91 low The workplace described in the scenerio is similar to the one where I work. A sense of cooperation and team work is a strategic goal of the agency
As managers we set department goals under this overarching goa
92 high If I were forced to be in this type of environment, I would do whatever it took to win, within reason of course. If I had to work harder, I would work harder.
93 high I’ve worked in similar environments before, I have self-respect though so I don’t push myself beyond my means. I wouldn’t allow a business to make me work like a slave just to keep my job. I would most likely do the bare minimum and wait until I get fired, essentially farming paychecks until I get fired.
94 low I would be more likely to cooperate with other co workers. I would volunteer for more assignments and check on others and ask if they need help. I would generally be more open and comfortable.
95 low I imagine myself being happy in the workplace and having friends to collaborate with. I think it would be easy for me to approach a colleague for help in this atmosphere and they would be willing to offer help as well. I can also imagine that we’re working together as a team and that there is not much competition to be on top, instead, we work together to be the best team.
96 high I do not think that I would work in an environment like this, however if I did find myself in this situation, I would work to change the culture. While healthy competition is good for business and maximizes results, unhealthy and cutthroat competition is harmful. Collaborative teamwork where teammates help each other grow and succeed is always better.
97 high In a fiercely competitive environment, I would probably become more competitive to safeguard my own interests. This might involve keeping certain information colleagues to preserve from advantage and concentrating on forming strategies partnerships with those whose best aid my career progression.
98 high In such a cutthroat environment, I would likely adopt a more competitive approach to survive and succeed. I might prioritize networking strategically, ensuring I build alliances with key individuals while keeping a close watch on my performance to outshine my peers. Additionally, I could engage in self-promotion and highlight my achievements to gain recognition, even if it means being less collaborative with others.
99 low In a cooperative workplace like this, I would trust my coworkers more and share issues that I may be having at work. I would trust them to have my back and not talk about me in a negative fashion. I would think they will also trust me to have their back.
100 low I would give everyone the same support that they gave me. I am not a person who aims to “move up the ladder” so there would be no competitive tendencies on my part. I wouldn’t want to do anything that would cause any tension. I would do everything I could to keep work a peaceful and positive place
101 low Since my current job is very similar to what is described above it is not hard to imagine. In a place like this we all help each other because one persons success is a success for the company. We try to make sure everyone as the support that they need to succeed and help the company succeed.
102 low In a supportive and collaborative workplace like this, I would prioritize teamwork and open communication with my coworkers. I would actively seek opportunities to help others on their projects, share credit for successes, and contribute to a positive atmosphere by encouraging my teammates and celebrating our achievements together. By fostering strong relationships and a sense of community, I believe we can all thrive and succeed collectively.
103 low In a very supportive workplace environment like this , I would choose to be helpful and resourceful to any of my mate who is having difficulty with their task.
104 high I would be keen on establishing good relationships with higher level staff. I would try to take the lead on assignments and give myself credit for most of the work
105 high In such a hostile workplace,I think I would keep to myself as much as possible. I’d keep my head down and do my job to the best of my ability- put in my hours and get the hell out of there. Keeping my nose to the grindstone would be my main priority. Staying out of office politics has always served me well, and in a situation as described above, I imagine it’s the only choice I would have.
106 low It seems like a great work environment. I guess putting in more hours to help the team would be a good. Maybe showing up early to get more work in.
107 low I think I would be more open to reaching out to colleagues to seeing if I can assist them in their work. I think that this would be an environment where it would be easy for people to reach out if they need help.
108 high I am not the type of person to step on other people to get ahead, but if people step on me, I might have to change and also be competitive, or I will be left behind. Playing the game is something I can do if need be. At the beginning I would be cooperative and see what is going on, but when I see people backstabbing others I will get in the game too.
109 low A workplace environment that is supportive makes it much easier to relate to your coworkers. In this situation, I would do my best to work as a team and fulfill the obligations to the best of my abilities so that my team may succeed as a whole.
110 high In a such tough setting, I would become more competitive and focus on my own success and built my connection with higher ups to boost my career
111 high This is a rough environment. I’ve experienced something like this. I am generally someone who tries to do a good job and tries to get along with everyone. I would simply work with them and hopefully project a better way of doing things. I am now retired. But, thinking back on it, the main problem I always saw but did not affect was the management above me. They are the ones causing or allowing this environment to continue. If you don’t push back against the behavior they are driving then nothing will change. To affect the greatest change is to change the minds and goals of the leadership.
112 high This sounds like a terrible place to work and I would not be happy there at all. I would have a hard time being so awful to my coworkers just trying to beat them all the time. I would likely not find any of them to be friendly and therefore would likely act like I didn’t care about them at all. I would be looking for a way out daily.
113 low I would appreciate working in this organisation because it appears to be a place where people collaborate a lot and try as much as possible to get the work done. The firm appears to be a safe space where people get to express themselves to get the best done.
114 high If I worked in this work environment I would keep to myself and focus on my own work and ignore everybody else when they ask for help. I would try to be friendly but just say I am to busy to help them but I would remain friendly so that I can ask for help from them and if I get it then I win. Though for the most part I would collaborate as little as possible so that nobody takes credit for my work.
115 high The environment sounds like a tough and extremely competitive place, and if the culture at such place accepts such competition i will focus on strategic cooperation partnership, aligning with people of like minds preferably of higher status keeping my interest in mind at all times and protected. I will gather a lot of information and share the bare minimum to my partner’s while secretly working on my own plans.
116 high I’d be secretive. I wouldn’t socialize with coworkers, even eating my lunch alone. If I had a good idea about how to improve a process at work, I’d tell no one.
117 high I would be nice to everyone but I would be focused on my own work. I would be doing everything I could to get ahead.
118 low I would contribute in a positive manner to the wonderful atmosphere this workplace has. I would contribute the best manner possible to reach the desired outcome.
119 high This would be a very stressful workplace environment. I would feel extremely exhausted every day after work because I would have to compete against other coworkers and I would not let others put my job at risk if I did not find my way in this competition.
120 low If this was the place that I worked at I would continue to be supportive and ask my co-workers if they needed any help with anything. If my co worker needed advice I would also be will assist.
121 low In this workplace, I would prioritize cooperation by actively supporting my coworkers, sharing knowledge, and offering help when needed. I’d make an effort to communicate openly and honestly, ensuring that everyone feels valued and heard
122 low IN this supportive I would prioritize collaboration by regularly offering help to coworkers on their projects. I would actively engage in team discussions valuing others input and sharing credit for our collective successes. This cooperative spirit would foster trust and enhance team cohesion.
123 low In this nurturing environment, my focus would be on collaboration by actively inviting input from colleagues on various projects. I’d provide help whenever necessary and celebrate team successes to foster unity and trust. By keeping the lines of communication open, I aim to enhance a cooperative culture.
124 low A POSITIVE WORKPLACE ENVIRONMENT IS ONE WHERE EMPLOYEES FEEL THEIR HARD WORK IS VALUED AND RECOGNISHED. REWARDS ARE NECESSARY TO ENCOURAGE CERTAIN BEHAVIOURS IN INDIVIDUALS. THIS IS ALSO KNOWN AS POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT. THESE REWARDS DON’T NECESSARILY HAVE TO BE MONETARY.
125 low I would definitely be supportive of my coworkers. We’re all in this together, so it makes sense that we help each other. I would try to help when I could.
126 high I would not be too happy with this kind of work place but i would strive to do my best. I would always be happy and do my best.
127 high In a competitive workplace, I would try to protect myself, but still be honest. Instead of tricking people, I would build good relationships and show my skills to succeed.
128 high Working is hostile and I can’t trust anyone. I am afraid if I don’t do well enough of a job I am at risk for losing my job.
129 low In this workplace I would act focus on teamwork by supporting my coworkers in building a positive school culture. I’d collaborate with teachers to problem solve behavior challenges and keep everyone in the loop and feeling supported when handling tough situations. It would be all about working together to create a school where students and staff feel safe, respected and ready to learn.
130 high I would competitive prioritizing personal success over teamwork. i would focus on strategic alliances, sharing selective information to gain leverage while remaining cautious of others.
131 low In this encouraging workplace, I would focus on collaborating with my colleagues by actively exchanging ideas and providing help on projects. Additionally, I would acknowledge their achievements to cultivate a team-oriented environment where everyone feels appreciated and inspired to contribute.
132 high In this competitive environment, i would initially focus on buliding strong relationship with my chance of success However, I would also be cautions not to become too trusting, as the participant’s .
133 high This seems like a situation where you would keep your friends close and your enemies closer. I would imagine smiling in their faces and being nice to them but making sure I was always one step ahead of them and doing everything I could on my own to get in front of them.
134 low I would be delighted to be in a cooperative and supportive work environment. I would be completely cooperative in this kind of workplace. I would support encourage and assist in the building the cultural environment of the team. I would accept open and honest feedback to improve my skills. Supportive teamwork would be an excellent environment to work in.
135 high well iys not exactly an easy place to work in but the best thing to do there is to play their game with them or leave ifyou find it toxic
136 high It sounds like a pretty horrible place to work but I guess I would probably adapt to the ways of my environment and be as competitive as I could be, just like everyone else is, or else I probably wouldn’t be able to succeed. I would try to kiss up to my boss to try and get more work than my coworkers have to do and generally try to earn more chances to show off my abilities and take away chances to do the same for my coworkers. I wouldn’t make friends with my coworkers, I’d simply see them as competition and treat them as such.
137 low WORKING TOGETHER WITH ONE OR MORE PEOPLE TO COMPLETE A PROJECT OR TASK OR DEVELOP IDEAS OR PROCESSES,, UTILIZING THE DIVERSE SKILLS, EXPERIENCES, AND PERSPECTIVES OF TEAM MEMBERS TO DRIVE EFFECTIVE TEAM PERFORMANCE.
138 high I would focus on buliding alliances and forming relationships with key. I would prioritize my own goals and interests, potentially mu own goals and potenrtially at the expense of others, to achieve success.
139 high I would put in my best everyday. I would however not step on toes or do unethical things just to get ahead.
140 low I thrive in environments where collaboration and team work are highlighted. Its important that you feel supported in a work environment and working together brings a cohesive bond that helps a team work better. I would join in and support each member of my team and provide a helping hand to them to get the job done.
141 low I would take advantage of everyone’s support and generosity and use it to get ahead. A wolf among sheep.
142 high I would always be defensive in a workplace environment like this. I would prioritize myself and my needs first and do anything to get ahead, as is the only way to survive here.
143 high I would have a daily attitude of I am just trying to survive. I would try to not gain any enemies and try to get along with everyone. I would stay to myself and hope that I don’t get into a serious ordeal with anyone.
144 high I would not like working here. It is not in my personality to be cut throat or competitive. I would almost always be on guard and never relax.
145 low In this encouraging work environment, my priority would be nurture collaboration and trust with colleagues. I would engage actively in team discussions, express my ideas freely, and invite feedback to make sure everyone feels appreciated. Furthermore, I would contribute assistance on projects and celebrate group achievements to strengthen the spirit of teamwork and shared success.
146 high In a competitive setting, I would adapt a strategic approach, focusing on personal advancement and choosing collaborations carefully.

Ok.

Manipulation check: Competitive Worldview

Exploratory: Break it down by scenario

Part of the problem might be that we just had too much variance between scenarios, and some might be better suited for an experimental manipulation like than others. Here, I’ll break down the 19 scenarios we had and see which ones show an effect. This is super under-powered, so I don’t want to read too much into it, but still, it’s worth exploring.

Here they are, listed by “Original PID.”

OG PID = 7
I work as an Ecommerce Specialist for a Fabric company that is expanding their virtual presence. As such, I make many nuance and minor decisions about the visual layout as well as the descriptions and images used for items/listings. All of these add up to a much bigger picture to increase sales and revenue. My manager was trying to get me to use hand-made and uploaded images for each listing, versus finding the manufacturing made or other second hand made images. This would be far more time consuming and would hurt our ability to streamline. The manager basically demanded that I did so, and told me that it was an order, and that they will hire someone to produce those images and provide them too me. They weren’t too loud, but they were forceful.

OG PID = 9
I was up for a promotion at work, and for context should add I was also 34 weeks pregnant. We were working to debut a product our engineering team had been working on. My manager was trying to get me to fly cross country to present our product to the board. They didn’t ask if I wanted to go, and they knew I wasn’t allowed to fly because of my pregnancy and said if I involved HR I would be sorry.

OG PID = 10
I work at a school, and I work with my supervisor in the Spring to coordinate testing. Well, my elderly Mom had a doctors appointment for one of those days, and I asked for it off to be with her, thinking that she would be ok on her own for one day. She flew into a rage and yelled at me so much that spit got on my face. She intimidated me into not taking that day off and to reschedule Mom’s appointment.

OG PID = 12
I am a worker at a retirement home and for some reason there is a chair in a person’s bathroom which I sit sometimes to take a short break. My boss saw me one time, marched me to her office and had a chat with me, telling me I can’t do that. I said very little and got out of there as soon as I could.

OG PID = 13
I work as a librarian, my manager wanted me to spearhead a project for a new children’s exhibit. I was very busy working on other projects for another manager and told her this. I found out they were the ones put in charge of the exhibit and were trying to foist it onto me. She threatened to revoke my already established days off.

OG PID = 15
I am a lab manager for a forensics lab. My manager wanted me to have the lab accredited through a national accreditation agency. He ordered me to do an enormous amount of documentation, research, and other work knowing I wouldn’t be compensated for the additional work, and he told me he simply didn’t care how many extra hours I had to put into it. He was stern and rude about it.

OG PID = 21
I work at Bath and Body Works. Our manager at the time wanted us to give everyone that walked in a hand massage with the lotion. I don’t like touching random people so I wasn’t doing it. She pulled me to the back and sternly let me know she wasn’t happy with me not doing it.

OG PID = 22
My manager was trying to get me to file paperwork at a court that I knew was not correct. He was very insecure with himself and his role as manager and wanted to show me that he was boss and I had to do what he wanted. Even though I was just a paralegal, I knew the correct information that needed to be included in the court document before it was filed with the court. I brought this point up to my manager and he basically told me I didn’t know what I was talking about and that I just needed to do as he asked. He called me into his office and told me sternly my job was to do his work as he requested. I was very hesitant and didn’t know what to do because I knew if I filed the paperwork as is, it would be rejected by the court.

OG PID = 28
I work in accounting and my supervisor oversees just our sector of accounting, not all of accounting for the whole company. I tend to be more savvy in the accounting software than the rest of my team including my manager. I will find more efficient ways to complete reports or tasks. I will share these findings in my group’s Teams chat. My boss will often speak down to me or try and pinhole my solutions on Teams. She speaks to me like a child and will say things like “did I tell you to find a new way to do this or did I ask you to run the report as we always do?” or “Is there a reason you did xyz when the rest of us are ok with doing abc like I ask?”

OG PID = 29
It was a project which was awarded to my manager, he couldn’t keep up with the project and then asked for my help in the project completion. While in the process of the getting the project done, my method of getting the work done was different from his and it was getting noticeable. He began asserting dominance stating the project was his and things needs to be done his way and I was only trying to be on the spotlight by using my method.

OG PID = 33
I work at a commerical bank, and my acting director, who is my de facto line manager, became very unappy when he found out that I was responding to the CFO regarding an issue that the CFO had emailed me directly about. This led to a very heated argument where he accused me of not respecting hierarchy and authority, and he began yelling and shouting and throwing things around.

OG PID = 37
My manager was determined to revamp our company’s social media strategy to increase sales, engagement and brand visibility. Her dominant behavior manifested in various ways throughout the process. First, she held a high-pressure meeting where she outlined her vision with unwavering confidence, leaving little room for dissent. Her tone was authoritative, and her body language exuded a sense of control, effectively conveying her expectations to the team.

OG PID = 38
There was a job that needed to be attempted the way that the company wanted it to be accomplished by following a set of instructions that were left by the client. The supervisor made sure we worked on teams and watched everyone including myself like an owl because he wanted it done as instructed. The supervisor was very demanding with the job and at times made it unbearable to do our job.

OG PID = 39
I work at a gym. There’s usually 3-4 of us at the front desk answering calls, signing people up for membership, giving tours, and answering general questions/concerns people may have. There’s also generally one person designated to janitorial duty/cleaning at all times. The janitor duty wasn’t mine, but occasionally we did help with cleaning tasks. On this day, no different than any other day, I was briefly chatting with a friend at the gym in sight of the front desk. My manger realised this and yelled at me to go clean something. I put an emphasis on yelled because it was definitely not common and primarily due to that fact was talking to a friend. I said okay and continued talking to close the convo. After about a min. or two, he yelled again. So this time, I immediately closed the convo with my friend, kind of looking at each other with a slight grin realising the power trip going on.

OG PID = 42
i work as a nurse in a healthcare facility taking care of patient needs is my role.my manager is my nurse in charge and oversees my roles and allocates duties if necessary. He one day asked me to take up my colleague’s duties as i was signing out. he did it forcefully without considering my plans and state of fatigue.

OG PID = 43
My role is working in disease control for state government and my boss is the program manager. We work in tuberculosis control and treat patients and try to keep the disease from spreading. She also sees patients but works more administratively usually and as a point of contact. I had recently come back from vacation and a few weeks later, my boss said my focus at work seems off in general and wrote a list with a few examples of things she had seen. She told me she is not a micromanager but can be toward me if needed and that if I can’t find something to do, she can always find plenty, that my work quality reflects on her and that I’m not to make her look bad.

OG PID = 44
I work as a Program Manager for a large customer. My manager was a Director at our company. He invited himself to a customer meeting that had been scheduled in another city. He wanted to review the customer and our operations. My team met him at a hotel before meeting with the customer. The customer environment was business casual, so my team dressed for that. In fact, business casual dress was common for all customer engagements. My manager did not approve. He strongly demanded that the entire team wear formal suits, ties and/or dresses for any and all customer visits. He was verbally abusive about the situation. Next, he noticed that some of the hotel rooms we were staying in during the customer visit were more expensive than others. He demanded that only senior-level employees be allowed to stay in the more expensive rooms, and actually made us change our reservations.

OG PID = 47
I work in a warehouse. We take frozen prepared food and load pallets and trucks. My manager constantly threatens to let us go if we do not do things fast enough for his liking and constantly uses fear of our job security to get his way right away. One day at work I had the flu and working the freezer and he was constantly badgering me for being so slow that day. I tried to use a sick day but he refused to let me take sick time saying he we was short staffed. So I was really sick working in a freezer and getting constantly badered by this manager.

OG PID = 52
I work as a software test engineer and my manager was trying to make me sign off on the latest module we implemented. There was a lot of pieces to test and I was not given enough time, because the development team did not finish on time. My manager was contacting me multiple times every day if I was finished. He would just repeat the same sentences, he said we really needed to finish the tests and hand it over, otherwise it would be a huge problem with the release.
