1 A Study Report: Introducing Margin of Error
1.1 Introduction
1.1.1 Definition
Margin of Error (MoE) is a statistical measure that quantifies the uncertainty or potential error introduced when estimating a population parameter based on a sample, rather than surveying the entire population. It represents the range within which the true population value is expected to fall, given a specific confidence level.
MoE is crucial in inferential statistics because sampling a subset of the population is often more practical, cost-effective, and time-efficient than conducting a full census. However, since samples may not perfectly represent the entire population, MoE provides an estimate of how much the sample-based results might deviate from the actual population parameter.
Mathematically, MoE is calculated using the formula:
\(MoE = Z \times \frac{\sigma}{\sqrt{n}}\)
where:
- \(( Z )\) is the Z-score corresponding to the desired confidence level (e.g., 1.96 for 95% confidence).
- \(( \sigma )\) is the population standard deviation (or sample standard deviation if the population value is unknown).
- \(( n )\) is the sample size.
A smaller MoE indicates higher precision in estimation, which can be achieved by increasing the sample size or reducing population variability. Conversely, a larger MoE suggests greater uncertainty in the estimate.
1.1.2 Purpose of the Study
The primary objective of this study is to analyze and compare different Probability and Non-Probability Sampling methods in estimating university students’ monthly food expenses. By applying various sampling techniques, we aim to:
Evaluate the Accuracy of Sampling Methods: Determine how well each method estimates the true population mean.
Assess the Impact of Margin of Error (MoE): Quantify the uncertainty in each sample-based estimate and compare the reliability of different methods.
Identify Bias in Non-Probability Sampling: Analyze potential sources of bias and their effects on survey results.
Determine the Optimal Sample Size: Calculate the minimum required sample size for a specified MoE to ensure accurate estimations.
Provide Recommendations: Offer insights on the most suitable sampling method based on accuracy, feasibility, and reliability.

Margin of Error (MoE) plays a crucial role in statistical sampling by providing a measure of uncertainty associated with sample-based estimates. Its significance includes:

Probability Sampling is a sampling technique in which every individual in a population has a known, non-zero chance of being selected. This method ensures that the sample is representative of the population, minimizing selection bias and allowing for generalizable conclusions. It is widely used in statistical research, surveys, and experimental studies because it enables researchers to estimate population parameters and calculate the Margin of Error (MoE) with precision.
The fundamental principle behind probability sampling is randomization, which ensures that every unit in the population has an equal or predefined probability of being chosen. This randomness is crucial for making unbiased inferences about the entire population based on sample data.
Key Characteristics of Probability Sampling:

- Every element in the population has a known probability of being selected.
- Selection is performed using a random process, such as a random number generator, lottery method, or systematic approach.
- Representative Sample
- Since probability sampling eliminates selection bias, the sample represents the population more accurately.
- It allows researchers to generalize findings to the entire population.

- The ability to compute sampling error, confidence intervals, and Margin of Error (MoE) makes probability sampling highly reliable for statistical analysis.
