Setting up

Demographic Subgroups

Adding variables for Race, Gender, Borough and Household adult count.

Create Weights

Weight the entire sample of each survey was weighted by race and borough together. To obtain a weight for that particular race in a particular borough, the NYC proportion from the Census Bureau “ACS Demographic and Housing Estimates” was divided by the Communities Speak portion.

The Communities Speak dataset has there are six racial categories: White alone, Black alone, Asian alone, Hispanic (containing Hispanic, White Hispanic, Black Hispanic, Asian Hispanic, Hawaiian or Pacific Islander Hispanic, Native Hispanic, and Other Hispanic). Else: Other, Two or More Races (except Hispanic), Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, Native, and Prefer Not to Answer.

In the Communities Speak dataset respondents were also asked to identify their borough and zip code in every survey (except the 2023 spring survey when only the zip code was asked and it was used to retrieve the borough).

The Census Bureau’s ” American Community Survey Demographic and Housing Estimates” used is the ACS 1-Year Estimates Data Profiles for 2022. The specific categories used are the Hispanic or Latino and Race: Hispanic or Latino (of any race); Other Hispanic or Latino; White alone; Black alone; American Indian and Alaska Native alone; Asian alone; Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone; Some Other Race alone, Two or More Races. The same data, but divided by borough, are used to also weight by geographic location: Brooklyn, Bronx, Manhattan, and Queens (the dataset does not contain enough observations to include Staten Island).
