A positive aspect of this data set is that it covers a wide variety of people, with around 39 identities listed. Also, six years of data is a decent amount of time, enough to show some trends. A negative aspects of this data set is how unspecific the categories are. What does “Anti-Gender Identity Expression” mean? Why is it different than “Anti-Transgender” crimes? I would also like to know more about what these hate crimes were, their severity. Based on my Googling, “hate crime” can be a broad term, as are the labels “Property Crimes” and “Crimes Against Persons.” We could have been given more interesting information about what types of crimes are being committed against what types of people. I think it would be important to know if, hypothetically, the “Anti-White” crimes were primarily property theft or damage, or maybe verbal assault, while the “Anti-black” hate crimes were murder and physical assault. With this data set, we don’t know. A path I might like to study about this data set involves combining the data from all hate crimes related to race and combining all hate crimes related to religion, then contrasting them to see which had higher reported numbers in over each year. Maybe I would do some research into what was going on in those years politically and socially to see if there are any correlations. I might also look to see if I could find data on the affluence of each county, to see if there are any patterns between those answers, and whether a county had more reported property crimes, or person crimes. Maybe in counties with less wealth, “Property Crimes” are less reported, whether that represents the reality of crime activity or not. After seeing the output of the hate crimes tutorial, I would like follow up by learning more about the intersectionality of these hate crimes, to see if there are any patterns there. For example, while one hate crime might be recorded as anti-age, who’s to say the majority of those anti-age hate crimes were not against black people. Hate crimes can be motivated by more than one thing, and each person has more than one identity. I would want to investigate police stations and figure out how hate crimes are categorized, how is it decided what identity is being targeted, when it may not be obvious? I would also like to figure out specifically how hate crimes against women are reported and recorded. For example, a quick Google search reveals that victims of domestic violence are most often women, which is not an uncommon crime in New York. Could such instances be recorded as hate crimes against women? According to the New York City Domestic Violence Fatality Review Committee, which also drew from data collected from 2010-2016, of the 254 incidences in those 6 years, “Black women were victims of intimate partner homicides at a rate three times higher than the rate among the rest of New York City,” and %83.7 of perpetrators were men. There are certainly arguments to be made that some of those incidents should be considered hate crimes. I wonder why, according to this data set, practically none, if any of those incidents were recorded that way.
