Question 1: Describe what each step in the code chunk above does (that is, how does cross-validation work?) Ans: see above
Question 2: How does the proximity-polygon approach compare to the NULL model? Ans: The rmse in NULL model is 435.3217, which assumes that its predicted value is the average of all data. This model does not have any complex features. It can only be used as a benchmark model to evaluate whether other models are effective. But the rmse in the proximity-polygon approach is 192.3947. This model is based on the proximity of spatial data, and it can make more accurate predictions based on spatial data.
Question 3: You would not typically use proximty polygons for rainfall data. For what kind of data might you use them? Ans: Vegetation coverage and species distribution are more sensitive to spatial information. Resource allocation data could also use this method to divide regions for emergency services such as nearest hospital and fire station. Proximity polygons are most useful when the variable being measured is assumed to be constant within the nearest station’s influence zone. Spatial relationships can be used to give more accurate predictions.

Question 4: IDW generated rasters tend to have a noticeable artefact. What is that and what causes that? Ans: The IDW method works by giving more weight to nearby points and less to distant ones when making predictions. Because of this, the closest points can strongly influence the result, even if they are not evenly spread out. In areas with few data points, the interpolation may create unnatural “ripple” patterns, leading to distortions.
