Analyzing Students’ Responses after a Self-regulated Learning Skills Intervention

Context

Data came from a self-regulated learning skill training intervention project I am currently working on. Students were randomized to receive a digital intervention via Qualtrics in which they were required to finish several modules of learning about effective learning strategies (e.g., self-testing, spaced learning, explanation, seeking help from experts, self-regulated learning skills). At the end of the intervention, students were asked one question: “How would you prepare for the next exam?”

Research Questions

Question1: What learning strategies are mentioned frequently in students’ responses?

Question2: Does the learning strategies mentioned by students align with the content of the intervention?

Methods

Participants: 48 students from a Physiology & Anatomy course at a community college

Methods: Textual analysis through tokens and tf-idf values

It is very common for students to mention words, like “study”, “learning”, and “exam” because this question asks them this question of how they would prepare for the exam. But we also saw some learning strategy-related words, such as “test”, “notes”, “objectives”, “flashcards”, and “videos”

Results

–Students would like to use flashcards to prepare for the exam

1, I will read the book a lot and rewrite the lectures. I will also make flashcards since it was more effective for me to remember the subject.

2, Next exam will definitely be more textbook reading and flashcards to help me succeed and get a better grade on my next exam. By doing these weeks ahead before the exam can have a big impact.

3, I will study for 3 hours and keep focusing on the important stuff rather than reading all of my textbooks. Then I will use flashcards to help me for memorization.

–Students would like to use self-testing to prepare for the exam

1: I think i have been doing a really good job studying and self testing. I also have a study buddy that quizes me and challenges my understanding to see if i am up to par.

2: I will continue to use learning strategies such as self testing, repeating information, and focusing by eliminating distractions. I will also study at least once a day everyday.

3: Study my textbook and attend class. Watch lecture videos and take my own notes. Periodically self test myself throughout chapters before moving on to see my gaps of knowledge.

Results

Question1: Students mentioned many learning strategies: testing, using notes and objectives, make flashcards, and watching videos.

Question2: These mentioned strategies align with the content of the intervention.

Significance

Analysis of students’ responses to the final question of the intervention revealed that students had a mastery of topics discussed in the intervention. It could be one way to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention.
