Hey there! I am Shams—a second-year Honors student at the University of Cincinnati, pursuing a double major in Economics and Business Analytics with a minor in Mathematics. I aspire to grow as a data professional with expertise in analytics and data science, combining technical skills with policymaking and business problem-solving. My long-term goal is to pursue grad school and become an Economist.
I took Cambridge Ordinary (O) Level and Advanced (A) Level exams in 10th and 12th grade. My subjects were A-Level Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Economics and I achieved A* (highest grade) in all subjects, leading to receiving the Daily Star Award. My interest in Economics and Mathematics over natural sciences made me interested in pursuing this degree combination at UC.
Currently, I am working as a research assistant at the Lindner Real Estate Center, where I collaborate with Dr. Gary Painter and Dr. Clemens Pilgram on a project exploring the reasons behind social mobility from rural high-poverty areas. We are analyzing adulthood outcomes based on childhood residence in rural or urban high-poverty neighborhoods.
I am also a Resident Advisor at Scioto Hall, managing the largest residential community at UC with approximately 900 students and directly overseeing a floor of 40 students. Additionally, I worked as a PACE Leader last semester and previously interned as a Business Editor at Dhaka Tribune, where I edited and optimized press releases and articles for publications.
My experience with R started from the summer of my freshman year when I was working as a research assistant and realized that Excel could not handle the large volume of data I was working with. I quickly learned how to clean data in R but could not further develop my skills as I shifted to Stata for the remainder of my research.
To brush up on my R skills, I started working on data cleaning projects over winter break, analyzing traffic crashes around Cincinnati. I am currently taking Intro to Econometrics and Data Mining at UC, where I aim to strengthen my foundation in R.
My tech stack includes Excel, Python, Stata, R, and Tableau. I am at an intermediate level in Excel, Stata, and Tableau, while I am a beginner in R and Python. I am currently taking courses in Excel, R, and Python to improve my expertise in these analytical tools.
