* Two trials on a snow day, February 12th (North County vs. Annapolis, and Broadneck vs. South River), were cancelled without rescheduling. Their schores were determined based on each school’s average score until then. First time seeing that since the 2021-22 season…

3. Ranking by average score

Note: Forfeit trials, if any, were included to calculate an average for each school. In the case of forfeit, the forfeit procedure was used to calculate a score.

Forfeit procedure:
1. Winning scores were averaged on 2/16 for prosecution and defense wins. Then, the average score was be applied for the “winning” school in the forfeit situation, depending on the side (i.e., 112 for state forfeit win and 111 for defense forfeit win).
2. No score was given to a forfeit loss.

5. What are the overall trial results?

QUESTION 1: Does one side tend to win more than the other?
Of the 36 trials, the state won in 17 trials, and the defense won 19.

QUESTION 2: How close are scores in a trial?
Among 35 trials (excluding 1 forfeit trials), the average score difference was 8 and the median was 7. In the below figure, each “dumbbell” is a trial, and each side’s score is noted by color: green for the state and purple for the defense.
