Paper Summary

We read a study about comparing diner behavior under slow and fast tempo background music at an upper-middle class restaurant in Texas.

Study Design

This was a randomized-block, experimental design with 1392 observations.

Conclusion

We don't believe the author's conclusions are justified. The study found that there was a significant difference in "customer time at table" between slow and fast music. The article says "fast music hurried diners out." However, the study also found that diners eating during the slow tempo music ordered significantly more alcoholic drinks than fast tempo diners, so there could be lurking variables present.
