Teacher Self-Reflection

My journey as an educator in quantitative genetics and animal breeding is anchored in a core belief: effective learning necessitates a seamless integration of theoretical knowledge and practical application. My approach to teaching is defined by a commitment to creating an engaging and interactive learning environment that not only imparts knowledge but also equips students to tackle real-world research and industry challenges.

Key Teaching Methodologies

  • Strategic use of technology (Shiny applications, full stack technologies)
  • Integration of global experiences and perspectives
  • Melding theory with practical experience
  • Adaptive teaching approach for diverse learning styles

Central to my teaching methodology is the strategic use of technology to render complex concepts both accessible and engaging. My proficiency in developing Shiny applications and employing full stack technologies has enabled me to translate abstract quantitative genetics concepts into interactive, visual learning experiences. For example, the ACGG Dashboard I developed aids stakeholders from large-scale breeding programs, and the Genomic Selection in Broilers App allows users to simulate the impact of various genetic parameters. These tools not only enrich learning but also encourage a hands-on approach to complex ideas.

My global experiences, having worked across multiple continents, significantly enrich my teaching style. This diverse exposure allows me to incorporate examples from various livestock production systems worldwide, enhancing students’ understanding of global issues and preparing them for international collaboration, which is increasingly vital in our field.

In my educational practice, I strive to meld theory with practical experience. While serving as a teaching assistant at Wageningen University, I crafted exercises utilizing real datasets, facilitating a practical understanding of theoretical constructs.

Acknowledging diverse learning preferences, I employ a multifaceted teaching approach. Visual learners benefit from my interactive Shiny apps and detailed graphical representations, whereas auditory learners gain from structured discussions and comprehensive explanations of key concepts. This adaptive methodology ensures comprehensive understanding across different learning styles.

My co-supervisory roles at Wageningen University and Aarhus University have significantly enhanced my mentorship capabilities, emphasizing the development of students’ critical thinking and research independence. I foster a research environment that is both supportive and challenging, encouraging innovative problem-solving. Moreover, having received excellent supervision myself during my master’s at Wageningen University, my postdoctoral studies at Aarhus University, Liege University, and Massey University, I have acquired a diverse set of supervisory skills. Each institution excelled in different aspects of mentorship, allowing me to integrate and adapt these varied approaches in my own supervisory style. For example, my strategy with students involves initially encouraging them to think independently, providing guidance as they navigate challenges, and closely monitoring their progress through regular check-ins and during critical phases of analysis. This tailored approach ensures that I am effectively supporting their development while fostering a culture of self-driven inquiry and learning.

Despite my relatively modest formal teaching experience, my proactive engagement in incorporating innovative teaching methods, such as Shiny apps, and my collaborations to align course content with the latest field developments have prepared me well for more substantial educational leadership roles.

Visions for the Future

Looking forward, I am eager to cultivate a dynamic and interactive educational environment in quantitative genetics and animal breeding that prepares students for our field’s rapidly evolving demands. I plan to expand the use of interactive teaching tools significantly, enhancing the learning experience with interactive elements that make complex concepts more accessible and engaging.. I am also committed to developing comprehensive course materials on statistics, quantitative genetics, and animal breeding that will include exercise solutions accompanied by an interactive dashboard, creating a lasting resource for future generations. Given my proficiency in full-stack development, statistics, and machine learning, I am well-equipped to design these materials in collaboration with various teams, including information technology professionals, statisticians, and molecular geneticists. In this endeavour, I intend to play a leading role, effectively integrating the university’s academic strengths into our curriculum and using cutting-edge technological and educational methodologies to make the learning process both dynamic and impactful.

Real-life Applications

Implementing real-life applications in teaching is a cornerstone of my vision. I aim to design course projects that reflect real-world challenges, foster partnerships with industry to bring practical issues into the classroom and develop case studies based on current research projects.

Global Perspective

My international experience fuels my ambition to imbue our curriculum with a global perspective, facilitating international collaborative projects for students and integrating comparative studies of different breeding programs worldwide.Furthermore, this exposure also enhances my cultural competence, enabling me to effectively understand and integrate the perspectives of students from varied backgrounds, fostering an inclusive learning environment.

Educational Leadership

I am committed to continuously enhancing my capabilities in educational leadership and curriculum development. With a solid foundation in innovative teaching methods and departmental collaboration, I am poised to take on greater responsibilities in educational planning and faculty development. My goal is to further enrich our curriculum with cutting-edge educational practices and to provide mentorship to junior faculty, sharing the extensive knowledge and techniques I have acquired through my diverse experiences. This proactive approach ensures that our educational programs remain at the forefront of the field, preparing students effectively for the challenges and opportunities they will encounter.
