Background: Asthma is a chronic lung disease characterized by episodic breathlessness, coughing and wheezing and it is well established that exposure to several environmental pollutants can trigger asthma attacks. The CalEnviroScreen 4.0 is the latest iteration of the California Communities Environmental Health Screening Tool that incorporates recent (2021) publicly available data for all indicators that reflect environmental conditions or the vulnerabilities of certain populations to environmental pollutants. This dashboard will aim to address the differing asthma rates (averaged over 2015-2017) among seven locations in San Diego county to better understand which locations in San Diego County are experiencing higher rates of asthma. This dashboard provides important information for residents of San Diego county to understand what areas are experiencing higher rates of asthma. It will also allow environmental advocates, policy-makers and local officials to learn what areas should be targeted for the implementation of effective intervention strategies to minimize these health disparities.
Results: Asthma rates in this screening tool are spatially modeled, age-adjusted rates of Emergency Department visits for asthma per 10,000. The data suggests that Chula Vista experiences a higher median Asthma rate while Carlsbad experiences a much lower median Asthma rate compared to the rest of the county areas included in this data subset. Chula Vista also has the second highest CES 4.0 score among these seven county locations.

And that’s the end of this module – in essence, it’s just a new way to organize and use an RMD to output a different product. And there are many more customizations and additional arguments that can further enhance your dashboard product, so be sure to take a look at the assigned chapter to learn about the possibilities! The final step is to click “Knit to flex_dashboard”. This will give you an HTML document that you can share with others.
