Sentiment Analysis: Disneyland vs Universal Studios

Introduction

When it comes to popular theme parks, Disneyland and Universal Studios both come to mind. These destinations evoke excitement and imagination and include family entertainment and thrilling rides. They offer different themes, attractions, and experiences, making them appeal to diverse audiences.

Key Questions:

  1. Sentiment Scores: How do positive and negative sentiment scores per word differ between Disneyland and Universal Studios reviews?
  2. Emotional Landscape: What emotions are associated with Disneyland and Universal Studios?
  3. Sentiment Trends: How has positive sentiment for Disneyland and Universal Studios developed over time?

Data Collection

On Kaggle, I found two different data sets, one for Disneyland reviews by Arush Chillar and one for Universal Studios reviews by Dwi Gustin Nurdialit. I filtered them to only show reviews from Disneyland California and Universal Studios Florida.

Question 1: Sentiment Scores by Word Comparison

How do sentiments scores by word differ between Disneyland and Universal Studios from reviews?

  • Disneyland has mostly positive sentiment scores by words appearing at least 1,000 times in reviews.

  • The most appearing positive words to describe Disneyland are “fast” and “fun”.

  • The negative sentiment is around the park being expensive and crowded, which shows the limitations around theme parks.

  • Universal has mostly positive sentiment scores by words appearing at least 1,000 times in reviews, but more negative words appearing than Disneyland.

  • The most appearing positive word to describe Universal Studios is “fun”.

  • Similar to Disneyland, the negative sentiment is around the park being expensive and crowded.

Question 2: Emotional Landscape

What emotions are associated with Disneyland and Universal Studios?

  • Positive and anticipated sentiments are most associated with Disneyland and Universal Studios.

  • This proves the excitement around visiting theme parks and the magical experience most people have when visiting.

Conclusion

In conclusion, there are mostly positive emotions associated with reviews of Disneyland and Universal Studios. If there are negative emotions associated with reviews, it is about how crowded or expensive the theme park is. However, the number of reviews is affected by the busier periods during the year.
