Snaps and Important Metrics Summary

Draft Value Chart

I wanted to look at how I could value players based on draft pick/skill level that had more flexibility compared to just levels of 1,2,3, or 4. For this, I looked into different NFL Draft pick value charts. There are many that are used and attempt to give a value to draft picks. Below is a graph showing mine, along with some other known ones.

The blue line represents the original draft value chart created by Jimmy Johnson, head coach for the Cowboys in the 80s. He worked with other individuals to create this chart, however, the values are not based on any statistical analysis. I believe this to be representative of how GMs tend to value picks rather than their actual value. As I will explain, this is extremely outdated.

The red line represents the Harvard Draft Value Chart, which uses a player’s Career Approximate Value (AV) to determine a pick’s worth. Approximate Value is essentially a number given to players based on the proportion of production for their team(s) given team success. The creator then took the averages of these values for each pick. He then ratioed the pick average with the overall average to find the pick value displayed on the chart. This value essentially represents how much better or worse this pick is compared to the average player. The value of the first overall pick was ~495, meaning the first pick on average is 395% better than an average player. This model, I believe, more accurately represents picks by not overvaluing early picks and not undervaluing later picks.

The black lines represent my model and data. I followed a similar methodology to the Harvard Draft Value Chart, but instead of Career AV, I used Average Yearly AV. This way, I could put players on a similar scale regardless of seasons played. I also used more recent data (2000-2019) compared to the Harvard Chart (1980-2005). Though the lines appear similar, my model undervalues earlier picks and overvalues later picks when compared to the Harvard model. I believe the difference in these models can be attributed to the difference in variable used, but primarily the recency of my data.The value of the first overall pick was ~333, meaning the first pick on average is 233% better than an average player. This model, I believe, more accurately represents picks by not overvaluing early picks and not undervaluing later picks.

One interesting finding is that my model assumes the average player will be picked around pick 88, whereas the Harvard Model believes they are picked around pick 96. However, the decline after this point is less than the Harvard model.

As seen in all sports, the skill of players has increased, but so has the number of skilled players. Because of this, the variation in skill of players has decreased, meaning there are more “average” players than before. Thus, we will see fewer outlier superstars or busts. I believe my model, with more recent players, is demonstrating this phenomenon.

Notes on the following tables:

Snap Tables

Below are snap proportion tables for all positions and eligible years. I use snap proportions so that players can be properly compared across teams that may have a different number of plays on a season. This is also based on the unit the player is apart of(offense, defense).
- Supplied are the probabilities that a player is NFL Bound(drafter or undrafted free agent) and Drafted given they belong in the percentile range of snaps. -Values given as probabilities rather than percents(probability of 0.375 is 37.5%).
- There are many interesting trends to pull from this, such as:
  - For some positions, Seniors in the 75th-90th percentile in proportion of snaps are drafted more frequently than the 90th-100th percentile. Could be from sitting out bowl games?
  - Graduates make it to the NFL less often. Could be that they have capped their potential in college.

Performance Metrics Tables

Each position has a table(s) that contain metrics evaluating their on-field performance.
- For example, QBs have passing and rushing metrics and LBs have coverage, pass rush, and run defense metrics.
I decided to use rate based metrics so that players could be more easily compared by efficiency rather than count.
All values in this table are calculated from a players final season, where they played 100 snaps or more.
The average value of metrics are given by success level to determine trends in player abilities.
A correlation value is assigned to the metric compared to a players pick value(given in the graph above).
- Values of -1 and 1 show a perfect negative or positive relationship, respectively. I used a color scale to attempt to show the magnitude of a correlation.
  - Values closer to -1 or 1 may have more power in predicting draft pick value.
  - If a value has a negative correlation, then as the draft pick value increases the metric value decreases.
  - If a value has a positive correlation, then as the draft pick value increases the metric value increases.
All metrics are pulled from PFF.

Metric Formulas

Offense

Passing

Passer Rating = Values range from 0-158.3(very long formula that isn’t very interpretable).
Completion % = Completions/Attempts
- Attempts = Completions + Incompletions + Interceptions + Throw Aways + Batted Passes + Hit as Thrown + Spike
Adjusted Completion % = (Completions + Drops)/Attempts
- Attempts = Completions + Incompletions + Interceptions
Big Time Throw Rate = BTTs/Attemtps
- A BTT is determined by PFF
  - “a pass that is highly difficult and valuable, and is characterized by excellent ball placement and timing”
Turnover Worth Play Rate = TWPs/Drop Backs
- A TWP is determined by PFF
  - ex. Poorly thrown pass or fumbling snap
Pass Yards per Attempts = Pass Yards/Attempts
Sack Rate = Sacks/Drop Backs

Rushing

Yards per Rush Attempt = Yards/Attempts
YCO per Rush Attempt = Yards After Contact/Attempts
1D/TD per Rush Attempt = (First Downs + TDs)/Attempts
MTK per Rush Attempt = Missed Tackles/Attempts
Rush Fumble Rate = Fumbles/Attempts

Receiving

Yards per Route Run = Yards/Routes
Targets per Route Run = Targets/Routes
YAC per Reception = Yards After Catch/Receptions
YCO per Reception = Yards After Contact/Receptions
Catch Rate = Receptions/(Receptions + Drops)

Blocking

Pass Block Pressure Rate = Pressures/Pass Block Snaps
Pass Block Efficiency = 1 - (Sacks Allowed + 0.5Hurries Allowed + 0.5Hits Allowed + 0.25Beaten by Defender)/Pass Block Snaps
Run Block Positive Grade Rate = Positive Grades/Run Block Snaps
- Grade determine by PFF.
  - “creating movement or opening a gap”
Run Block Negative Grade Rate = Negative Grades/Run Block Snaps
- Grade determined by PFF.
  - “clear losses, and the speed and dominance in which the loss occurs
