This dashboard explores long-term changes in global and regional dietary patterns based on data from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and compiled by Our World in Data. The dataset spans from 1961 to 2022 and provides the average per capita dietary energy supply by food group (in kilocalories per person per day).

While undernourishment and calorie intake are fundamental indicators of malnutrition, they do not paint the full picture. What we eat also determines the quality of our nutrition — protein, fats, and micronutrient diversity matter significantly for individual health. People can consume enough calories but still suffer from micronutrient deficiencies due to monotonous diets.

This data helps us understand not only shifts in energy intake but also the composition of those calories: how much we rely on cereals and grains versus fruits, vegetables, dairy, fats, and sugars — and how that has changed globally and within specific countries like Australia.

It also provides insight into the environmental implications of our food systems. Achieving both sustainable farming and nutritious diets for all remains one of the world’s greatest challenges.
