Dell Medical School, Hunter Ratliff
Summer 2015

Opportunities presented to students

Goal: Provide an opportunity for middle and high school students from throughout Travis County to learn about the various health professions and take part in hands-on health sciences experiments

  • Earn CPR or First Aid certification
  • Participation in human cadaver dissection
  • Exposure to a range of instruction in clinical simulation labs
  • Hands-on experiences with EKGs & ultrasounds
  • 3D technology demonstrations
  • Neuroscience and chemistry experiments

Demographics of students

By Gender:

  • Female: 75
  • Male: 17

By Race:

  • Hispanic/Latino, any race: 38
  • White, not Hispanic/Latino: 26
  • Black, not Hispanic/Latino: 9
  • Asian, not Hispanic/Latino: 7
  • 2+ races, not Hispanic/Latino: 4

Demographics: Observations

  • Strong representation of women, especially for the Middle School camp
    • Glad to see this, especially given the formative worldviews shaped in middle school
  • No Black men
    • This is a misrepresentation, as I know there were some black boys present
    • However, this is based on reported race… It might be that black men didn't feel comfortable disclosing their race
  • 2:1 ratio of English only speakers to Spanish speakers
    • Not representitive of the current/future population of Austin
    • Even still, impressive considering the status quo
