Here we discuss some items relevant to the Pre-PIT Scan, as well as some initial planning for the sheltered and unsheltered counts

Pre-PIT Scan

The below is a (not super beautiful) map of the Pre-PIT scan regions, symbolized by the number of individuals counted in during the 2024 count in each census tract for reference. Click on each region to get the count of individuals in each tract; you can also see the breakdown in the table below the map.

Count by Region
subname region_count classification
CB1 168 Very High
FS1 4 Low
FS2 4 Low
FS3 4 Low
FS4 0 Low
NE1 50 High
NE2 40 Medium
NE3 28 Medium
NW1 0 Low
NW2 38 Medium
NW3 2 Low
NW4 64 High
S1 58 High
S2 75 High
S3 23 Medium
S4 35 Medium
W1 7 Low
W2 51 High
W3 128 Very High

Survey 123

We advise using Survey123 again for the Pre-PIT scan. Survey123 does not have an auto-populate option where a user can select a response at the beginning and continue to have it automatically filled in for subsequent responses. However, we advise exploring one of the following two methods:

  • Creating multiple surveys by breaking down the region shapefile by outreach team. With this, we could use colors, big warnings on top, etc., to make sure outreach teams are using the right survey.
*(Example: This survey is for the FEATHERFIST outreach team. If you are not part of FEATHERFIST

  • Using radio buttons at the beginning of the survey, which only requires one click.

Unsheltered Count

Sources for estimates for the 2024 count are included below.

2024 Estimate Sources
Source Count
default_of_zero 565
hotspot_estimate_winter 77
manual_certainty 19
pre_pit_scan 138

While at this point we obviously do not have all of those sources ready, the below shows what our classifications would be if we used manual certainty and unsheltered 2024 counts for classifications.

Classification
Classification Count
rare 689
certainty 21
medium 82
high 8

With this breakdown, to keep the sampling the same as last year (85% of all medium tracts and 10.5% of all rare tracts) we would need to sample 171 tracts.

Note, however, that this is assuming we keep the manual certainty tracts the same as we did in 2024. The below map shows all of the manual certainty tracts from last year for DFSS review.

Sheltered Count

We have discussed adjusting sheltered count methodology so that shelters with more families are not underrepresented. To do this, we advise adjusting the percentage of heads of households surveys based on household size for each group. The average household size for individual adult households is just barely over 1, so for individual households the percent of hoh’s surveyed should remain at 10%, however, for households with adults and children this should be adjusted:
