A atual doença causada pelo coronavírus, popularmente conhecida como COVID- 19, é uma nova estirpe do vírus, o coronavírus 2 da síndrome respiratória aguda grave
(SARS-CoV-2) (BLAZQUEZ-FERNANDEZ; LANZA-LEON; SANCHEZ-RUIZ; CANTARERO-PRIETO, 2023; ZHANG; WANG; WANG; HU et al., 2021). Inicialmente os primeiros casos foram confirmados na cidade Wuhan, na China, em dezembro de 2019 (ZHU; ZHANG; WANG; LI et al., 2020). Após a confirmação dos primeiros casos, o vírus revelou-se altamente contagioso, espalhando de forma incontrolável por todo o mundo, o que levou a Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS) declarar uma pandemia global em março de 2020 (WHO, 2020). Uma vez declarada a pandemia, os governos nacionais e regionais criaram políticas a fim de quebrar a cadeia de transmissão do vírus, o que incluiu diferentes medidas. Diante disso, o objetivo desse estudo foi identificar as condições associadas a dismagnesemia pelo perfil de pacientes internados com diagnóstico de COVID-19 associados aos distúrbios hidroeletrolíticos nas primeiras vinte e quatro horas de internação na Unidade de Terapia Intensiva adulto em um hospital filantrópico na cidade de Ouro Preto.

No presente estudo, as medidas de associação e correlação serão estimadas utilizando técnicas apropriadas para variáveis de diferentes naturezas, aplicando a correção de continuidade em situações que envolvem variáveis dicotômicas. A correção de continuidade é uma técnica estatística utilizada para ajustar a estimativa de correlações quando há desequilíbrio entre as categorias das variáveis binárias, ou seja, quando uma categoria ocorre com muito mais frequência que a outra (McDonald, 2009; Agresti, 2013). Isso é fundamental para garantir que os resultados reflitam de forma mais precisa as relações entre as variáveis e não sejam enviesados pela disparidade nas frequências observadas.
No caso de variáveis dicotômicas, a correlação tetrachorica será utilizada, que é uma medida de associação entre duas variáveis binárias, assumindo que ambas são observações de variáveis latentes contínuas subjacentes. Quando se trata da associação entre uma variável dicotômica e uma variável contínua, será utilizada a correlação bisserial, que mede a relação entre uma variável dicotômica e uma variável numérica. Em ambos os casos, a correção de continuidade suaviza as estimativas, melhorando a precisão quando as categorias binárias são muito desequilibradas.
A aplicação dessa correção tem sido amplamente recomendada em estudos estatísticos, uma vez que reduz o risco de distorções nas estimativas e aumenta a confiabilidade dos resultados inferenciais (Agresti, 2013; McDonald, 2009). Assim, a adoção da correção de continuidade neste estudo assegura maior rigor metodológico e solidez nas conclusões sobre as relações entre as variáveis.
