There were 294 cases seen at different Disease Reporting Units in the National Capital Region from January 1 to October 11, 2024. 72 (24%) were measles cases [clinical measles compatible (65, 22%), laboratory-confirmed measles (7, 3%)] 4 laboratory-confirmed rubella (4, 1%) and 218 (74%) were discarded [non-measles/non-rubella] [Figure 1]

0.1 Figure 1. Distribution of Reported Measles-Rubella Cases by Classification

MEASLES CASES: There were 72 measles cases reported from January 1 to September 07, 2024. This is 71% higher than the same time period last year (42) [Figure 2], and 15% higher than the previous five-year (2017, 2020-2023) without outbreak average (61) [Figure 3]. Most of the cases were from Quezon City, with 24 cases (33%) while the Municipality of Pateros has the highest incidence rate (0.15 per 10,000 population). Clusters of suspected measles cases were observed in four barangays of Quezon City and one barangay in Caloocan. No fatalities have been reported.

0.3 Figure 3. Distribution of Measles Cases by Morbidity Week (Epidemic and Alert Treshold)

Ages of the cases ranged from 6 months to 39 years, with a median age of 3 years. Most of the cases were female (39, 54%) [Figure 4]. Of the 60 cases aged 9 months and above, 19 cases had history of previous measles vaccination with at least one dose. (19, 32%).

MEASLES AND RUBELLA SURVEILLANCE INDICATORS:

While the 2024 Annualized Measles Incidence Rate, Suspect Measles Reporting Rate, and Specimen Adequacy Rate were reached by the region, the Non-Measles/non-Rubella Reporting Rate, Timeliness and Adequacy of Case Investigation, and Measles Compatible Rate were below the target but almost reached by the region. [Table 1].
