Introduction

The following report is based on the NOAA weather data for Columbus, OH for the years 2010-2018. The data were collected at the John Glenn International Airport.

Daily Temperatures

The two plots above represent maximum and minimum daily temperatures for a given month, respectively. Each dot in the graph represents the highest and lowest temperature for a given day, in a given month, ranging from January 2010 to December 2018.

One interesting thing to note is that the median daily temperature, depicted by the bold horizontal lines through out the box plots, regardless of maximum or minimum, occurs during June-August; with July having the highest median temperature.

The range of maximum daily temperatures for July was greater than the range for the minimum daily temperatures, in July. The range of minimum daily temperatures for August was greater than the range for the maximum daily temperatures.

Monthly Averages and Standard Deviations

The table below lists the average maximum and minimum temperatures, along with the standard deviation, for each month encompassing 2010-2018.

One question that the table helps answer is which month’s temperature data was not as spread out as the others. August’s standard deviations for their max temperature and minimum temperature are the smallest out of the other months, which suggests that the temperatures measured in August were not as widespread.

Another question that the table helps answer is which month does the trend of the standard deviation decreasing switches a trend of the standard deviation increasing. The standard deviation for the max temperature and minimum temperature is decreasing, until after August. Then, the standard deviation starts to increase from September to December.

Monthly Highs and Lows

The data from the table above is used to generate the two graphs below, which represent the average monthly highs and lows, respectively.

April Daily Highs

The following time series graph was created from a subset of the original data. It isolates only the daily highs for April 2018, and tracks how the daily highs changed throughout the month.
