Do reduced opportunities for women in the areas of education, health, politics, and work contribute to women’s belief that men are justified in striking their wives?
The World Bank has data on women’s opinions about men’s right to beat their wives from 74 countries. Some countries have several measurements of these fields that come from different years (coverage goes from 1991-2015). These data are gathered in six fields:
Women who believe a husband is justified in beating his wife when she refuses sex with him (%)
Women who believe a husband is justified in beating his wife when she goes out without telling him (%)
Women who believe a husband is justified in beating his wife when she neglects the children (%)
Women who believe a husband is justified in beating his wife when she burns the food (%)
Women who believe a husband is justified in beating his wife when she argues with him (%)
Women who believe a husband is justified in beating his wife (any of five reasons) (%)

Data collection takes place via multiple UN, World Bank, and WHO studies, each of which has its own data collection procedures. As I narrow down the most significant factors, I can list more specific data collection protocols. A listing of the sources of data collection is listed in the Data Source section below.
These data come from a number of observational studies.

The response variable(s) will be one or more of the spousal violence variables above. These are numerical variables representing support for the belief that men are justified in striking their wives in certain situations.
The explanatory variable(s) will be one or more of the additional numerical variables relating to the economic, educational, political, and health situation of women. These are determined by the use of correlation matrices and variable selection according to completeness of coverage.
Because of the complexity of the dataset, additional time is required to determine which variables will be used. When this is accomplished, relevant summary statistics can be offered. What can be determined at this time are how many observations will be available (we limit observations to the country and year in which violence against women statistics are available): 135. We can do summary statistics on all of the fields (represented here by codes) for these 135 observations in order to discern which are likely to be usable (have low numbers of NAs):

We could, for example, select only those variables for which the number of absent values is below 15, which gives us a much smaller list of measures (22 explanatory variables, to be precise). This is a more workable scenario.
I foresee an iterative process of developing a useful set of variables that show correlation with attitudes vis-a-vis violence toward women. This statistical process has only begun in my case. For now, I add the correlation matrix for the explanatory and response complete variables. Here I show just the columns related to my response variables.
correlation<-data.frame(cor(select(smaller_tidy, -c(1:3)), use="pairwise.complete.obs"))
