I absolutely think that, by merit of its existence, the data set has value as a tool in anticipating and preventing future hate crimes. However, the inherent inequality and lack of accountability regarding how the crimes are documented and reported does make it difficult to gauge the reliability of any findings from this data set. The specification of what type of crime was committed is useful, as it adds a layer of detail that might, for instance, show which populations are more likely to be subjected to violent crimes. The lack of specification beyond “property crimes” and “crimes against persons,” though, leads a lot of grey area that could stand to be better defined. Furthermore, given the prominent role that police departments are known to play in perpetuating violence against minorities, the lack of information about acts of hate from the police makes this data set a less complete assessment of prejudice against minorities. I would argue that the collection of the data needs to be much more strictly defined and enforced for the data set to be truly valuable.
I would be interested in determining if there are any connections between the victim populations of the crimes; are certain populations more likely to be targeted alongside other ones? Also, as aforementioned, taking a closer look into the type of crimes being perpetuated against each population, to see which ones are more likely to experience crimes against property vs. crimes against person, would be worth pursuing.
Given that I don’t personally know exactly how the different counties are laid out, it would be interesting to see how the data would translate if displayed on an actual map; would the counties that tend to experience higher rates of hate crimes be more concentrated, or spread out more randomly? Additionally, although utilizing the total population numbers of each county was useful in calculating rates of hate crime occurrence, it would be useful to have a more comprehensive population data set listing the amount of people who identify with the given minority labels in order to see how rates of hate crimes committed against each minority compare with the minority’s overall population density.
