Hate Crimes Essay

Positives and negatives

What I like about this dataset is how the hate crimes are broken down into categories such as race, religion, sexual orientation, and gender. The details make it easy to dive in and observe trends in counties across NY state from 2010 to 2016. To add, the yearly data provides an opportunity to observe long-term patterns and determine if notable events or policy changes impact the numbers.

On the flip side, there are some negatives. The dataset doesn’t include critical details like population density, making it challenging to contextualize the raw numbers. It’s difficult to determine if a county’s crime count is high or low compared to how many people actually live there. Also, we don’t get info on what happened after the hate crimes—such as arrests or legal outcomes, which would help us understand how these incidents were handled by law enforcement.

Two different paths to hypothetically study on dataset

It is fascinating if I could observe how local or national events, like elections or economic downturns, line up with spikes in hate crimes for specific categories, such as anti-immigrant or anti-religion crimes. This could shed light on how external factors influence hate-motivated violence. Another potential path could involve normalizing the hate crime data by county population and demographics. By comparing the rate of hate crimes per 100,000 people, researchers could examine whether certain counties with specific demographic compositions are more prone to particular types of hate crimes. This could help identify whether hate crimes are disproportionately affecting specific racial, religious, or sexual orientation groups in certain areas.

Two things to do to follow up after tutorial

To get a better understanding of the data without losing key details, I’d group similar categories (like “anti-transgender,” “anti-gay male,” and “anti-bisexual” under an “anti-LGBTQ” umbrella). This would make it easier to analyze trends without getting bogged down by too many specifics.

I would also further explore hate crime rates per capita. By calculating the number of incidents per 100,000 residents (like in the tutorial’s last step), I could determine if certain counties have higher hate crime rates relative to their population. This could help point out areas that need more focused attention or policy changes.
