The data set provides a lot of insight on national hate crimes. One positive aspect of this data set is that it provides enough data in order to not only recognize, but also analyze trends and patterns of hate crimes taking place. One negative aspect of this data set, is that it’s a self reported data set, meaning cities and states have control over how much data they put forward ans how the term “hate crimes” is defined, this can lead to inconsistencies in the data alongside a misrepresentation of the truth. Two paths that I personally would like to study about this data set are the geographical distributions of hate crimes and the impact international/local incidents have on hate crimes. For the geographical distributions, I think it would interesting to see where the “hot spots” of hate crime would be and then be able to do further research on why that is. As for the international/local incidents, I would like to see exactly how the correlation these events may have on hate crimes in certain cities and states. After seeing the output from the hate crimes tutorial, I’m interested in following up by doing a formal statistical analysis of the data presented and maybe even reach out to certain government facilities to fully understand how this data is gathered and interpreted.
