Report Description
- To ensure accurate comparisons, wastewater data is normalized to
account for variations in flow rate, human input, and population
size.
- Following StatsCan practices, data is normalized by flow rate and
population, reported in mg/day per 1000 people using the formula:
- mg/day/1000 people = substance concentration (mg/L) × flow
rate (L/day) / population × 1000 people
- This normalization method, which adjusts for population and flow
rate, is referred to as “popflow.”
- To enhance the accuracy of the data, additional normalization
methods are applied using the following analytes:
- Caffeine
- Cotinine
- Creatinine
- Pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV)
- A sample calculation using these additional normalizers is as
follows:
- mg/day/1000 people = substance concentration (mg/L) /
normalization analyte concentration (mg/L) × flow rate (L/day) /
population × 1000 people
