Who is Raúl Ugalde?
Who am I?
I am a seeker of truth and beauty, an artist who finds meaning in the quiet spaces between thoughts. My journey is one of constant questioning—who am I beyond the surface, beyond the labels society imposes? This philosophical inquiry shapes my existence and my art, where each brushstroke, sculpture, and piece of jewelry is a reflection of my search for deeper understanding.
As a self-taught philosopher, I believe that art is not just a visual experience but a bridge to the metaphysical. My work in watercolor and acrylics aims to capture fleeting moments of insight, translating the abstract into the tangible. Through sculpture and jewelry, I explore the duality of form and essence, aiming to create pieces that are both beautiful and thought-provoking.
Originally from Mexico, I now find myself in South Korea, a place that is both foreign and familiar. Here, I continue to explore the intersections of culture and identity. My background as a gemologist adds another layer to my art, where the precision and patience required in working with stones inform my approach to other mediums.
To sustain my artistic practice, I run a small Mexican restaurant in South Korea, a space where I blend flavors and traditions from my homeland with the vibrant culture of my adopted country. Just as in my art, the restaurant is an expression of who I am—an individual navigating the complexities of identity, culture, and creative expression.
In every piece I create, whether on canvas, in stone, or in the kitchen, I strive to express the intricate dance between thought and form, philosophy and life.
