Topics

1) Rumen Fermentation and Digestion

  • Explain the process of fermentation in ruminants.
  • Explore how fats, proteins and carbohydrates are digested and absorbed within the rumen.
  • Describe the composition of the rumen microbiome, its role in digestion and its effects on nutrient availability.

2) Digestive process in fowl and monogastric animals

  • Describe the digestive anatomy and physiology of the avian digestive system highlighting any unique features compared to other animals.
  • Describe monogastric animals’ digestive anatomy and physiology (pigs, dogs, cats and horses).

3) Vitamin and Mineral Deficiency Diseases in Livestock Animals

  • Enlist primary vitamins and minerals in livestock nutrition and provide requirements.
  • Common deficiency diseases in domestic birds, ruminants, and monogastric animals.
  • Highlight signs and symptoms and potential solutions.
  • Examples of key vitamin-mineral interaction.

4) Energy partitioning in livestock animals.

  • Gross energy, Digestible energy, metabolisable energy and net energy.
  • Also explain units for measuring energy in animal nutrition.

5) Alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters (AGP) in poultry and pigs.

  • Discuss reasons for the decline in AGP usage (e.g. antibiotic resistance)
  • Enlist alternatives to AGPs (e.g. Probiotics, prebiotics, organic acids, enzymes, etc.)
