This is a review of the response function (RF) analysis conducted by Vibrant Planet on 2024-08-07 for the SARA for canada-lynx, and sub-SARA canada-lynx. Below is a map of the species’ habitat provided to Vibrant Planet, including other sub-SARAs if present.

Effects of each ecosystem component (EC) do not vary across treatments and disturbances (i.e., if canopy cover is negative for the species, that effect is propagated across all RFs).
Throughout this document, we use ecosystem component names that match the variable names found in the Forest Vegetation Simulator, which is how we predict treatment and disturbance scenarios and resulting RFS. However, here we provide a lookup table with a more complete, plain-language definition. \(~\)

Each EC can contribute as a) a geo-filter, reducing the pixels considered in the response function; b) a continuous effect, positive or negative; or c) a suitability effect, where a range of suitability, with minimum and maximum, are used.
ECs can also be grouped to create combined effects (e.g., diameter of trees is positive, but only above a given basal area in the stand, yielding a DBH x BA effect).

For each of the Ecosystem Components identified in the workshop, we developed expected response functions (ranging from -1 to + 1). These reflect the expected change in that variable, based on the +/- continuous effect or within/without suitable range, compared to a dynamic no-action baseline.

\(~\) \(~\) \(~\) \(~\) This is a review of the ecosystem components (variables) that are ingredients in the response function (RF) analysis for for canada-lynx, and sub-SARA canada-lynx. For each ingredient, the basic variable’s response (proportion change, from -1 to +1) to each disturbance or treatment scenario is shown, followed by plots of any further transformations (for example, from a “raw” version of the variable to one based on a suitable “range” of the variable, or two or more variables combined.
For variables that are transformed into suitable versus unsuitable, please reference the expert-defined suitability ranges in the EC table at the top of this document to understand the changes in patterns. For example, if shrub suitability is the 10th-70th percentile of the distribution, and high-severity fires increase shrub density (which they generally do), you may see a decrease in suitability of shrubs for high-severity fires because shrub growth increased, pushing those pixels from within the suitable range to above the range, and therefore unsuitable. \(~\) \(~\)
