Positive Effects of Music Exposure on Extroversion

Exposure to music has a positive effect on undergraduate students and extroversion states. Music has the ability to act as an universal language among all cultures and backgrounds. In our study we aimed to show consistency between amount of music exposure, music genre, and increased state of extroversion.

Exposure

  • Construct definition
    • Amount of exposure music exposure directly correlates personality state
  • Operational definition
    • We provided “Hey-Ya” performed by two separate music artists in the following conditions.
      Condition 1- Presented entire song (upbeat version)
      Condition 2- Presented entire song (somber version)
      Condition 3- Presented sixty-second length (upbeat version)
      Condition 4- Presented sixty-second length (somber version)

Genre

  • Construct definition
    • Method of music that is found to be agreeable. Genres change characteristically depending on the type of music
  • Operational definition
    • We provided “Hey-Ya” an upbeat tempo, fun song by Outkast randomly to participants.

    • We provided “hey-Ya” a somber version of the same song by Eden randomly to participants.

Extroversion

- Construct Definition- Someone who finds excitement, enjoys social situations, naturally enjoys being the center of attention.  

- Operational Definition- We measured Extroversion by self-administration anonymous survey

Take Home Message

Our findings are consistent with our hypothesis. We found participants with more exposure to upbeat music consistently scored higher in extroversion state.
