Position

This question ask you to rank how you would the strength required for each positions.

Instruction

The instruction given is unclear, therefore you were asked to come up with your ranking without providing too much clarification of the instruction, it attempt to assess how would the average person determine positioning based on the strengths of the lists.

I have attempted to rewrite the instruction as below so that it’s hopefully clearer (based on my understanding), and I think there are two possible options.

  1. Table Choice Roll-Off: Each team Captain rolls a die to determine table choice. The winner can choose either the first pairing table or the second and third pairing tables.
  2. Secret Champion Nomination: Each team secretly nominates a Champion. This nomination remains confidential until the final step.
  3. First Player Nomination: Each team secretly nominates their first player to be a “put up” (this player cannot be the Champion).
  4. First Pairing Selection: The “put up” player from each team selects one of the two remaining players to be their pairing. These selections form Pairings 1 and 2.
  5. Third Pairing Formation: The two unselected players from each team automatically become Pairing 3.
  6. Champion Pairing: The Champions are now revealed and become Pairing 4.

Analysis output

On average, we believe the strength required for individual positions are displayed as below.

  • rank: this is the average rank, smaller number meaning we believe the stronger lists will be placed in that position.
  • rank_range: We will also look at the deviation for the guesses for all the positions, smaller number in rank_range means more consensus.
position rank rank_range
Pairing 1 2.000000 3
Pairing 2 2.333333 1
Champion 2.666667 3
Pairing 3 3.000000 2

The group ranking could potentially be interpreted as how the other groups might think on average, therefore, it might be advisable to consider strategy to counter the other group’s picking. The emphasis should probably be given to the position with more consensus.

From the analysis outcome it seems that Pairing 1 (put up player) and Champion has the largest discrepancy in terms of range, which means they are likely to be either occupied by the best or worst list. Which means Pairing 2 and 3 could be what you optimise.

The outcome of this analysis is perhaps more powerful combined with latter analysis in this report to determine best positions.

Competitiveness of our oppponents

The next set of analysis looks at the competitiveness of players from different teams.

Note that for competitiveness the scoring is as follows:

  1. Easy Peasy
  2. Sweaty

Also note that the question instructed you to rank the competitiveness based on both list and player (if known).

Team competitiveness

First we will look at the competitiveness of different teams.

Analysis Opportunity

  • For the tough match-ups, perhaps look at the ones with large player competitiveness range
    • Perhaps your teammate has a good strategy to defeating that opponent.
    • It could also indicate that some team members might know more about that particular list or player than others
  • Based on this outcome, and the outcome from the positioning analysis. How would you estimate the opponent team to position their players based on their strength?
    • You might also want to consider how they would self assess their strength within the team.

Matchup analysis overall

Now we will analysis the data where you were asked to rank your teammates against individual opponents.

Who on our team has the strongest list against other opponents on average?

Smaller value for our rank means higher average ranking as determined by the team, which means stronger list.

team_mate our_rank
Matthew 1.958333
Blake 2.593750
Michael 2.708333
Ben 2.739583

Next we can analysis our players against the opponent players depending on their strength. For example, one of our players with a strong overall list might not do particularly well for a set of opponents that only get ranked position 3 in their team, whereas one of our players with an overall weaker list might do better. Therefore, this is to analyse potential generic matchup strategy

team_mate 1 2 3 4
Ben 3.000000 2.500000 2.583333 2.875000
Blake 2.416667 2.791667 2.583333 2.583333
Matthew 1.666667 2.166667 2.125000 1.875000
Michael 2.916667 2.541667 2.708333 2.666667

When analysing the table above, it’s advisable to start from column 1 (represent the strongest opponent in each other team as determined by their average competitiveness), and identify who from our team is the strongest against them based on the lowest score, then move across the columns.

Arguably, their might be less difference between the players ranked 2nd and 3rd. They might also be the ones the opponent team focus on less, therefore we will collapse rank 2 and 3 and analyse again.

team_mate middle two strongest weakest
Ben 2.541667 3.000000 2.875000
Blake 2.687500 2.416667 2.583333
Matthew 2.145833 1.666667 1.875000
Michael 2.625000 2.916667 2.666667

Matchup Analysis Individual Team Target

Now we will conduct this analysis for individual opponent teams.

For each opponent team, you should be able to form a view of who in your team should target which strength in the opponent team, and also possibly which opponent. Then you could potentially use the player comp score to determine who will be considered the strongest etc in the opponent team, or you might want to combine information you know about their team members. The position analysis at the start could serve as a guide in terms of how the opponent team will assign their players to positions.
