I sourced my data for incorporated cities, lakes, and major rivers through the California state geoportal. It was difficult to find as many government agencies offer maps, however few offer the appropriate files, or the right data. Topographic data was gathered from the sciencebase link provided in the assignment instructions, however the site was down for the entirety of the day that I tried to work on this.
