Broken Social Contract

May 2024a: Analysis

Background

This is a quick pilot of an experimental manipulation of values kept, broken, or control.

Participants were asked to list values of the US on paper and weigh them, as in the correlational study. Then, they were told to think about the value that they thought was the most important: how is it kept vs. how is it broken vs. its role in general, in America.

Then, they completed measures of anti-establishment, support for change, trust in institutions, voting intentions.

Manipulation

All participants were asked about the top value that they listed:

ctrl	Freedom	I think the main role of freedom is captured most in the freedom of speech. In the US freedom of speech is a main pillar of Constitution.
kept	personal liberty	At the age of majority we have personal license over our own lives, be it to do good or ill or most often, a combination of the two regardless of our circumstances of birth. That is most often not the case in most parts of the world outside the western democracies.
kept	freedom	It is allowing its citizens to bear arms and shoot guns for their own safety. It upholds the other rights lined out in its constitution too
kept	freedom	Americans have a lot of freedoms, such as the freedom to vote, the right to bear arms, the freedom of speech, etc. People use the promise of freedom to defend their actions on a daily basis.
ctrl	Access to healthcare	Every one in the US has equal access to healthcare regardless of financial statues or race. I am form an Asian country where concept of health insurance is unheard of. In US every one have access through health insurance either through their employer or their state. And US has some of the world renowned hospitals that are leading ways in developing technologies in health care.
kept	Independence	The U.S. values freedom of speech and expression. People have every right to say what they want about who ever they want. People also have the right to pursue the things they want in life like jobs, romantic partners, living situations, and hobbies.
ctrl	Liberty	It is to be able to look at life and do the best things. The things that we look forward to forever.
broken	Freedom	I think the biggest thing currently is the censorship, and consequently the lack of freedom of speech. There are certain platforms that only show one side of the information. And with the bills leading to the banning of TikTok, that further supports this point. I feel like TikTok is one of the feel platforms where one can post whatever they want and viewers would be connected and aware of the doings around the world.

ctrl	freedom	The role of freedom is clearly stated in the constitution. I believe this is the main reason why U.S declared war to Britain during the revolutionary war.
broken	Freedom of speech	We are allowinn more and moe limits being put on speech. For instance, protesting has become more contentious. Laws are being made and passed to limit protesting.
kept	integrity	The U.S. is constantly supporting governments all over the world in crisis situations. It has gone to war with the idea of protecting democracy the world over.
ctrl	Freedom	It is written in our laws that we have the freedom to do and become what we want and it’s very symbolic. Anyone can become successful in our country and it’s due to the nature of our society that we are able to be what we are unlike other countries around the world.
ctrl	right to vote	We all have a voice and the right to vote is fundamental. Voting is a chance to be heard, by everyone in our society.
broken	Independence	Sometimes persons are not able to get what they desire after voting. Independence can also not be achieved when a person is continuously placed under rules and regulations that does not uphold to an individuals rights.
ctrl	Freedom	Freedom is mostly illustrated by the First Amendment. The First Amendment gives us freedom of speech particularly to speak against the government. In other countries, this could literally get you killed.
kept	A Better Future for Posterity	The US must do more for future generations. Many of the lawmakers are deciding upon a future they may not be alive to see, and short-sighted ones that only benefit their own re-election campaigns. Issues such as environmentalism, energy independence, and livable standards both economically and structurally are lacking. Future generations do not see a country they can believe in and are increasingly opting out.

broken	Freedom	There are some laws that restrict our freedom such as mandatory seatbelts. Gun control laws also impinge on our rights and out freedoms.
kept	freedom of speech	People have opinions on various topics and may agree or disagree with a particular topic. Freedom of speech allows you to publicly announce your views on the topic.
kept	Its supposed to be a nation of liberty	Its not living up to this because its been infiltrated and taken over by radical ideology. We are a captive nation.
broken	Freedom	Freedom is carried about in ways such as people choosing how and for whom they want to work. Also it allows for freedom of movement and freedom of religion
ctrl	freedom	I believe freedom is carried out however best supports the political views of the person you are asking. When asking a conservative, freedom is described as ensuring certain constitutional rights are protected (gun rights, etc). When asking a liberal, freedom is described as ensuring everyone has the ability to do what they want with their bodies.
kept	Profit	In a sense, it is not for the working class, but it is for the many U.S billionaires who are able to profit through underpaying and exported labor to gain higher than average profits per unit on their product sales. In general, wealth does exist in the U.S very clearly, but is generally divided within a smaller circle rather than the country as a whole.
kept	freedom	We have the freedom to choose how to live our lives. We can choose our religion, career paths, and spouses. We have the freedom to express our views without fear of retaliation. We have the freedom to choose our leaders.
ctrl	Freedom of Speech	Freedom of speech is allowed in the sense that people are able to express their minds within reason defined by the law. So long as it is not slanderous nor an explicit threat, at least legally defined, discourse can be carried out. This is usually done through online and offline means.
kept	Rule of law	Generally speaking, the rule of law is what allows the system of governance to continue unimpeded. No one, even the president, is supposed to be above the law. That seems to have been failing lately.
kept	freedom	We still have freedom of the press. We have freedom to practice different religions. We have the freedom to protest.
broken	vote	The ability to vote is the most important right because it allows us to have a say in who runs our government at all levels and in many cases lets us choose laws and mandates. As a group we choose who we hope are the best leaders and because we have frequent elections we can remove the bad politicians. The US is not living up to the right to vote in a couple of different ways. One is the antiquated idea of the electoral college which means less popular candidates have become president. Another problem are voter rights and how difficult it is for some underrepresented groups to be able to vote at all. Finally there’s voter apathy. Less than half of registered voters bother to show up at the polls. Oh and one more thing - it’s difficult for third parties to break into the 2 party system. That’s not good either.

broken	Freedom	Sometimes freedom is limited or politicians or people try to control freedom. People in the US are allowed to do whatever they want. Forcing people to think or talk a certain way or think a specific way is against freedom. The government forcing you to do things is not freedom.
broken	Freedom	The taxes we are obligated to spend. I feel like we have to give so much, that we lose our freedom of time and and economics.
kept	Freedom	We have a judicial process which, for the most part, is fair. Our freedoms are not denied unless we willingly and purposefully take away someone else’s freedom, or commit another egregious act.
kept	freedom of speech	People are allowed to peacefully protest. People can actually say racist and offensive things to each other. People can campaign for any person they would like to.
kept	Freedom of religion	The freedom of religion is upheld every day. People of all religious beliefs express it openly each and every day.

broken	Freedom	There are many people who would not consider themselves to be “free” in the United States. For example, there are people who are homeless and cannot live as freely as others. There are also people who experience oppression, like African American people and LGBT people, which makes them able to live less freely in many parts of the country.
ctrl	Equality	Equality is improving but is not on where we want it to be. there are still old-style thinkers or hater that want to keep their world unchanged. I can’t say companies themselves but there are people who will provide more opportunities even with lack of skills to individuals who have the same color or sex that they have which is Sad at this day and age.
ctrl	Freedom	You are able to choose your path regardless of where you were born or who you are. You are not limited by the government or anyone else. You have the choice to do what you want.
ctrl	Freedom	One gets to make choices that will affect their daily living, usually without consequence. Freedom to live, in general, to how you want.
kept	Strong, healthy economy	The United States is a capitalist country that is run entirely on privately-owned businesses that build up into large corporations. The economy revolves around buying goods and services from individual businesses instead of relying on them from the government. This capitalist society allows for social mobility that is not possible in many other countries.
kept	equality	The US has failed over the years in providing equality to the people of the country. In recent years there have been some strides towards equality, but the system is still lacking significantly.
broken	freedom	There are small sections of the country that are limiting people’s freedoms. One way is pro-choice people in Texas are not allowed to leave the state to get an abortion. If America is free, how can one state say you can’t go to another state to do something that is legal there?
broken	freedom	The U.S. over the decades has put in place too many regulations on things such as business and property rights. This overregulation has over time reduced the freedom we have to operate a business and enjoy our property in whatever ways we wish to.
kept	Free speech	Free speech is a right and everyone has the right to air his or her opinion. The U.S is living up to it by not suppressing the voice of the people. Everyone feels heard.
broken	equality	Equality is carried out in American society by how everyone has equal opportunity to grow. It’s not living up to its promise because even though everyone has equal opportunity to grow economic and racial challenges arise.
ctrl	Freedom	We have freedom through the things we are able to do and things we are able to say. People migrate here for the freedoms. We especially are entitled to the pursuit of happiness and we experience freedoms through religion, speech, and much more

kept	individualism	The US is very tolerant of people expressing their personal views, regardless of how polarizing or disruptive they may be. Even when peoples views cause division and uproar, the US seems to be extremely tolerant of allowing people to be who they are.

broken	opportunity	The US is living up to its promise for opportunity. Anyone can come here and start a business or get a good job and provide for their family.
ctrl	freedom	American can freely speak their minds about how the feel about the government without fear of reprisals. People have the freedom to achieve their economic goals and how prosperous they would like to be. The U..S. Constitution guarantees certain freedoms and that’s what makes America great.
broken	competitive standing	America wants to be seen as the greatest country to live in, yet it does little to help the people who are struggling. Lately, it has probably been a joke for other countries when it comes to the leadership Americans have to choose from and the policies that the government has chosen to focus on. America is constantly falling behind in education for children as well when compared to other countries, and it doesn’t seem that the government sees it as something that needs to be worked on.
kept	Equality	I don’t believe the U.S. is living up to it’s promise of equality. There is too much division, far too many homeless people, and hatred toward people who may be different from yourself.
kept	Freedom	The Bill of Rights and people clinging to it and exploiting it as much as possible. This includes freedom of speech. That’s a huge one as people would go for that whenever they are challenged.

kept	Freedom	The basic freedoms defined in the constitution are protected by law and are an intrinsic part of the American culture to this day. Freedom of speech and freedom of religion are a great example, specially when compared to other countries.
broken	Justice	One of the most glaring flaws in the justice system is racial bias. African Americans and other minority groups are disproportionately represented in arrests, convictions, and harsher sentencing compared to white individuals for similar offences. This bias can be seen at various stages of the justice process, including policing, prosecution, and sentencing.
ctrl	Freedom	Freedom is the core of the US attained independence from the British. Freedom in the US is binding on citizens to act freely in many social ways with repression. Freedom allows expression of self and self values.
ctrl	Equality	Equality stands as a cornerstone of American ideals, providing the foundations for a just, prosperous and inclusive society. i think the government still needs to do more and be intentional about this in order to achieve the ideal American society.
ctrl	free speech	Free speech in the U.S. allows the right wing hater who spends most of his of her life hidden away spewing hate to emerge occasionally with full fury into the light of day. This happened in Charlottesville.
kept	individualism	individualism has always been defining feature of america life and is reflected in both the best and worst f aamerica.
broken	Power to the people	People should be the one electing the government officials. If the people are not happy, they should be able to vote them out
ctrl	Equality	Equality means providing equal opportunities and treatment to all American citizens. It also is very important to uphold human dignity
broken	peace	with the cases of robbers hitting and terrorism with gun shooting happening here and thee, it is not vey peaceful at the moment, hopefully gun control is further implemented
ctrl	individualism	in american society. individualism is often associated with the idea of self reliance and the emphasis on personal achievement and success. however, this emphasis on individualism can sometimes lead to a sense centeredness and a desire to win at all cost.
kept	Uniting people	Giving opportunity to immigrant to file for their family outside America. This enables legal immigrants to unite with their families.
broken	rights	Such as the freedom to speech. If a person says too much or others don’t agree sometimes people in power is ready to shut them down.
kept	rule of law	free and fair elections that ensure our rights as citizens are protected. There are also regulations that protect whistleblowers.
kept	Democracy	The US has, despite challenges, maintained free and fair elections. Transitions in power have proceeded peacefully
kept	Equality	We uphold equal access to jobs, school admissions, etc. We are known for being a diverse country with equal access to resources.
ctrl	freedom	You are free to be whoever you want to be without any kind of restrictions.No government telling where you want to live, be who you want to be, worship whoever you want or whatever religion you want to follow and the opportunity to follow your dreams.
ctrl	free speech and press	The role of free speech and press is so that the government cannot suppress unpopular views and ideas. Everyone should have the right to express themselves and consider all views, not just the ‘approved’ ones.
kept	Freedom	Freedom is given in several forms. We have freedom of speech and freedom to make many types of choices.
kept	Popular sovereignty	The voting system consists of people voting and electives representing their votes. People always get a say, no matter how small.
kept	pursuit of happiness	A person can expevt to get a reasonable good start to their education. They can choose what field of work that they want to delve into. They can commit to a family or not.
ctrl	Cultural Diversity	Diversity teaches us to respect the fact that all people are important regardless of race, culture etc. This is a great value which every citizen is aware of.
kept	Freedom	The ability to vote to elect our leaders. A criminal justice system that is designed fairly to try each court case. A democratic society, where we are not under a dictatorship.
ctrl	Equality	The government is trying their best to incorporate this when it comes to race, gender mostly. Low income housing, different hiring processes for women and slowly but surely, wages
broken	strength	US is failing to keep it’s power on a reasonable level agreed by it’s people. We’re not the power we once were, but are trying to retain that image.
ctrl	Freedom of choice	Freedom of choice is fundamental US right,empowering individuals to shape their lives and pursue their passions.it foaster,inovation,creativity,and personal growth
kept	Liberty	The freedom of press to write about the news. As well as the liberty to vote for our representatives.
kept	freedom	We have different constitutional freedoms that we can rely on. For example, freedom of speech - we’re free to say what we think and believe without being ostracized or punished. We’re also living under a democratic government, so we have freedom to vote and choose the way we want to live and the beliefs we want to hold.

broken	minimal government	We do not apply the constraints of our Constitution to our federal government. We allow, even expect it, to do things not permitted under the Constitution. By the way, that it the biggest reason we are now over 33 trillion dollars in debt!
broken	Freedom	Too many taxes and regulations. Politicians trying to mandate laws and invasion of privacy of personal issues. Not allowing states rights to prevail. Having a hugely biased media and large democrat base in the media
broken	Power	I think every time the United State’s overasserts it’s power, it delegitimizes itself. By helping to colonize other lands, it has essentially become worse than the british we originally fought.
ctrl	Democracy	For the present, I believe democracy is still important to many Americans. Although, we are in real danger of losing this fundamental way of life because there is a real chance that in the next election a man will be elected who doesn’t believe in Democracy. If Trump is elected I have no doubt that this country will come under his dictatorship and democracy will no longer be the guiding principle of our country. I do not believe we would ever have another election until his death, if he is elected. Democracy is under a real and terrifying threat from Trump and his supporters.
broken	Different is bad	It’s the way that we are conditioned to be wary of people who aren’t white american and who don’t believe in the things that the average American is supposed to believe. American tends to live up to that everyday.
ctrl	freedom	Freedom is the bedrock upon which The United States of America was built. It is our freedom and way of life that makes most all other countries envious of us. Freedom is what prompts immigrants to strive to relocate here. Freedom is the blanket of protection that all Americans sleep under. Freedom is the reason that the United States of America is the best country in the entire world to live in. Our freedom was hard fought for and not easily attained nor easily maintained. America is perhaps the country that most embodies the value of freedom and liberty.
kept	Liberty	Ongoing debates and legal battles regarding civil liberties serve as a testament to the country’s commitment to safeguarding individual freedoms. All citizens have the opportunity to pursue their own paths.
ctrl	Democracy	Democracy is an important role that provides the opportunity for the will of its citizens to be heard and respected through voting. Democracy is the fairest way for a country to be controlled by citizens. Democracy ensures fair leadership.
broken	freedin	The United States is actively taking freedoms away from people today, such as the overturning of Roe v Wade.
ctrl	economic freedom	The ability to have freedom in how people work, trade, acquire, etc. I believe that it allows for a sense of autonomy in how individuals make their livelihood.
kept	Our right to freedom	We are able to be free to express our values openly. We are free to practice religion as we choose. We are free to bear arms to protect ourselves as well.
ctrl	Liberty	We are losing liberty in this country. If we had true liberty I would be able to pursue whatever medical interventions that I see fit - or not. There would be no vaccine or mask mandates. There would be no suppression of effective medicines in lieu of deadly gene therapies.
kept	freedom	I believe people for the most part have been able to live free and live to their upmost potential. I think most people are able to live and do what they please.
ctrl	democracy	Most politicians are corrupted by money from the rich. Democracy is almost over because of the courts like the supreme court is packed with crooks whose goal is to turn this country into a right wing fascist dictatorship so the rich can steal everything and hurt whatever they want to for profit.
ctrl	Freedom of speech	Citizens are allowed to speak their minds in public, and to publicly criticize elected officials. Citizens cannot be jailed for anti-government demonstrations. All Americans, regardless of political affiliation, are allowed to voice their opinions. And, there is a free press and uncensored (most days?)mass media apps.
ctrl	Freedom	We have the freedom to attend a public or private school. We have the freedom to travel where we want. We have the freedom to work in a career we chose.
kept	Capitalism	Americans are encouraged to be entrepreneurs and start businesses. Many people in America are judged by their net worth, this creates social pressure to earn more. Many of our tax laws are biased towards wealthy business owners so that they pay very little in taxes compared to poor or middle-class people, some see this as a good thing that will encourage business owners to keep innovating.

kept	freedom of religion	Each person in America is allowed to go to any church they want. They can worship in any religion the want. If there are restrictions, it is placed by their own family or church not the government. They also do not have to have a religion if they so desire not to.
broken	liberty	Many recent policy decisions have been based upon restricting the rights of individuals in order to protect the feelings of some noisy groups. Liberty is taking a back seat in service of some religious nuts.

Also the influence of money in politics, through lobbying, and campaign financing, undermines the principle of equal representation which allows wealthy individuals and corporations to influence the political process.

At protests and peaceful gatherings, the media is often met with violence or force on part of the state-funded police. This expression is guaranteed, but not enforced and is rarely brought to higher courts for resolution.

The system of capitalism, especially with how it operates in the United States, creates a divide amongst the population based on their wealth, but still, those who have to work and produce labor to survive, are nowhere near those who simply extract surplus labor value from the working class, and are thus able to live in wealth, despite not producing labor themselves.
kept	independence	We have been free from the rule of a dictator or a one party rule until recently. As long as the elections are tamper free and the citizens believe that there is no interference, then we have a democratic process. And having that kind of process leads us to believe that we have control over the ruling party.
kept	Opportunities	The US, having a capitalistic economy, provides economic opportunities unmatched in the world. It’s the reason thousands of immigrants are trying to get in.
broken	liberty	The first thing that comes to mind is the ban on abortions, which negates the liberty for a woman to make decisions about her own body. We had made progress in the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, but it feels like we are going back to the dark ages regarding the place of women in society.

Its failures can be attributed to system bias which gets the most scrutiny whereas the individual’s reasons for failure are not so much.

Every individual has the right speak in public about any and all aspects of the American government, from how policies are adopted to how they are enacted, without fear of governmental retribution. broken	Government by the people	Gerrymandering is the number one cause of of the US government NOT living up to the promise of the Constitution of the people being governed by consent. The second reason is the Electoral College. It should be abolished in favor of the popular vote to truly be a fair representation of the will of the people.

Efforts to restrict voting rights continue to be a major challenge, and it is essential that the U.S. strengthens voting rights act to ensure all citizens have an equal say in political process.
kept	all created equal	I think the US is still a land of opportunity. The American Dream is still possible and attainable. Although the U.S. has many challenges and divisions, the value of “all created equal” is still held by many if not most. There are many barriers to this ideal but the barriers are being constantly challenged and many are still able to rise from very humble beginnings.
broken	Pursuit of happiness	I feel that actions we might take in our lives that will help us be happy have become more limited over the last years. As an example, many of us worry about mass shootings, so we think twice about going to events we might attend with family and friends. It’s important that EVERYONE vote, and those who work some schedules cannot get to the polls. In states where mail in ballots are discouraged or difficult to qualify for, we are falling short. And when polling places are too far away from many people, in some cases, their right to vote is in danger. And when people are intimidated into voting a CERTAIN way, their right to vote is jeopardized.

This cultural diversity is celebrated and embraced through cultural festivals, heritage months and community events that showcase the contributions of different ethnic and cultural groups to American society.

Certain people on the far ends of political parties tend to want t restrict freedoms.

broken	Individualism	While I think individualism is one of the values that is still strongly adhered to, it can be argued that increasing government oversight and/or cultural trends in the country have had a negative impact on the ability to express ones individualism. For example, many people I know are often uncomfortable speaking their minds on various controversial topics for fear of backlash. This has a limiting effect on peoples’ ability to truly be an individual with their own convictions.

The original citizens consisted of property-owning (and slave-owning) white men, constellating in places like Virginia. The fetishization of property ownership extends, I would argue, into seemingly nonsensical rights of corporations, and money generally, such as the Supreme Court decision that political contributions count as free speech.

There is a minority of people who are being overly emphasized and are used as an excuse to unconstitutionally prevent protests from being organized.

The government should not place unreasonable controls on its citizens and important issues are free for everyone. I think we do a good job for important things like freedom of speech, protest, expression, etc. But for women’s issues I feel the government is overly curtailing their rights.

broken	Freedom	I believe that in the subject of freedom, the United States is sometimes limiting the Freedom of Speech. The government is regulating or restricting the algorithms of such speech to it’s liking.
ctrl	Diversity	Diversity makes up our country and is celebrated by our “melting pot” ideals. Minus political affiliations influences, the citizens should all unite as Americans and be accepting of our differences.
kept	Freedom	You still have the freedom to protest for example, the freedom to speak your mind as well. Not all freedoms are so clear however, but the freedom to spend money how you want is another freedom.

kept	strength	The US shows strength by having a large and powerful military and strong diplomatic influence throughout the world. The US intervenes in conflicts throughout the world especially in protecting the weaker countries from more powerful countries. The US also uses its economical strength to influence the world.
ctrl	Freedom	Freedom allows me to help elect leadership. Freedom allows me to pursue education. Freedom allows me to choose where and how I live.
kept	freedom	In the U.S., we do have many freedoms that people in some other countries don’t have. We can speak out and criticize the government without risk of incarceration for our words, choose which religion we want to practice, or not practice, without being forced to follow a state religion, vote for politicians to represent us in government, have privacy in our homes, and many others.
broken	freedom	Mandating covid shots took away freedom of the citizens. Nothing should be mandated especially a drug that has now killed people. There was no freedom of choice.
broken	Pursuit of monetary wealth	The U.S. government has created many regulations that, in order to follow, one must spend money. It is expensive to start a business, expensive to submit taxation reports; heck, taxation keeps people poor.

broken	the right to life	It is failing in a lot of ways. It’s not doing enough to protect its citizens from harm due to opioids, homelessness, poverty, gun control, etc. It has failed maintaining basic infrastructure such as roads and bridges putting further life in harm’s way.
ctrl	Freedom	Freedom is still a vital and important concept to what it means to be in America and an American. The ability to assemble and to speak up about issues, policies or things that should be addressed is a vital part of what protects our freedoms as well. These are constantly under attack and must be defended.

Systemic racism making sure that POC are kept poor enough to see either the Military or being a criminal as their only way out. The intentional demolition of Reproductive Rights that reduces women to farm animals. The intentional demolition of the protections surrounding Voters’ Rights making it difficult if not impossible for people to vote. Gerrymandering. Elected officials completely ignoring the Will of The People because they were paid to. Elected officials who support insurrectionists and have actively committed treasonous acts to lick the boot of anyone with money to throw at them. Corporations intentionally inflating the prices of everything just to increase their profits while the people of the nation can’t afford to buy the necessities let alone something extra. Less than 10% of the people holding 85% of the wealth and paying less in taxes than someone on minimum wage. There’s a character limit.
kept	freedom	American’s can choose our path to do whatever we are capable of doing (born traits/learned traits). Though it does matter the family you were born into. Being born into a family of privilege/wealth is the easiest way to succeed in the US. Getting into a college is one thing bit paying for it and being in debt after graduation is another. The US has a very dominate military and us Americans should feel pretty safe.

broken	Freedom of Speech	One way in which the US is not living up to its promise of Freedom of Speech is by censoring speech. During the COVID era, the government conspired with social media companies to censor speech on their platforms that didn’t align with the message the government wanted expressed about COVID’s origins, how it was transmitted, or about the safety of vaccination.
kept	liberty	I feel that in American society today, its citizens are allowed to enjoy the liberty promised in the Declaration of Independence by allowing each person to pursue their own personal interests as they see fit.
broken	American Nation	The U.S. government has been undermining the American nation by promoting free trade and open border policies. They’ve shipped jobs overseas and undermined native workers.
