Hypothesis 5a: People with stronger zero-sum mindsets will be less likely to embrace cooperation as a strategic response to scarcity.
Hypothesis 5b: People with a stronger zero-sum mindset will be more likely to embrace a “win-at-all-costs” attitude towards competitions.
Hypothesis 5c: People with stronger mindsets will be more likely to embrace a social dominance orientation towards group relationships.
For each hypothesis we first fit a baseline model predicting each generalized strategic preference from zero-sum mindset (i.e. zero-order correlations). Second, to ascertain the robustness of our finding, we add relevant control variables to the models. In Study 5a, we predict preference for cooperation from zero-sum mindset while controlling for all Big Five personality traits (most notably agreeableness) and primal world beliefs (which notably includes the general belief that the world is a cooperative place) as well as demographic characteristics. In Study 5b, we predict preference for cut-throat competition while controlling for all Big Five personality traits as well as other dimensions of competitiveness and demographic characteristics. In Study 5c, we predict preference for group-based dominance from zero-sum mindset while controlling for demographic characteristics (most notably sex, income, and political orientation) and measures of cognitive style (need for closure) that have established associations with SDO. Further to the broader question about whether zero-sum mindset should be considered as psychologically distinct from economic zero-sum beliefs, in Study 5b and 5c, we also compare these tests of the zero-sum mindset’s convergent validity to that of economic zero-sum beliefs.
