The purpose of this study is to pilot an experimental design of a study examining the impact of chat-gpt as a tool on writing socially skilled messages to employees.
Participants were shown the following prompt:
Imagine that you are a manager at a mid-size firm.
One of your employees, Alex, has been under-performing in the past
couple of months. As is common in your firm, when employees don’t
produce enough high-quality output, they risk getting fired.
This employee is normally on par with the required output, but ever
since they had a family-related matter, they have been struggling at
work. As a good faith measure, you want to tell them that they are
currently at risk of losing their job and that they better improve their
performance if they want to stay.
We now ask you to write a message to Alex, with the goal of getting them
to work harder.
We will send your message to other people on Connect, asking them to
imagine this scenario from the employee’s perspective. Specifically,
they will indicate the extent to which they would work hard at their job
on a 0 (Less Hard) to 100 (More Hard) scale following the receipt of
your message.
If your message is in the top 10%, you will be granted a $5 bonus for
this study.
[Participants in the AI condition were then introduced to an in-survey
interface with chat-gpt].
We then piped their responses over to a different set of participants to
rate on a number of dimensions.
