Death rates

It is very difficult to understand mortality patterns. The latest official death rates of the Worldbank are from the year 2021. The annual death rate for Sudan in 2021 was 7 per 1000 people. In that year the death rate for the Netherlands was 10 per 1000 people. Although the life expectancy by birth is higher for the Dutch people. The most likely explantion is that the Netherlands is one of the most rapidly aging countries in Western Europe. The median age in Sudan is 16.8 and in the Netherlands 42 in 2023.

But to monitor and judge mortality in complex humanitarian emergency is difficult. Figures fluctuate and mostly reported per 10.000 a day. So reported Oxam International for Gaza 250 deaths a day and compared this with other conflict areas like Syrie and Sudan. This report mentioned 51.6 deaths a day for Sudan. Only they did not mention the denominator of the rate or the used method. I suppose 10.000 people per day. Medicins Sans Frontiers (MSF) reported in januari 2024 a death rate of 2.25 deaths a day per 10.000 within three camps in Sudan. Converted to a annual death rate per 1000 this means annual 82.1 per 1000 people living in a champ. C.B Keely et. al (2001) examined mortality patterns in complex humanitarian emergencies, reviewing the state of knowledge and to improve research and insights.They warned that the death rates between refugees within a camp, idps and refugees in general life under different circumstances and has a huge impact on their well being and living conditions.

the migration flow map is a spatial one-to-many flow layout algorithm using triangulation, approximate Steiner trees. There are many papers and publications about edge bundling for example H.Zou et.al (2013),Edge Bundling in Information Visualization.

Regression fitlines

To do the regression analyse I change the different years in year one etc. to get a real nummeric value in comparision to the population figures who are also a numeric value. In the quadric equation x=1 means year one and x= 2 year two.

Odds and Log odds ratio

The log of the odds ratio is called the log-odds ratio. The log odds ratio is more symmetric and easier to interpret in statistics. Also it is simple to convert an odd ratio to a log odd ratio with te log and exponent function on a calculator. In the case of Sudan and the idps the odds ratio is 1.12 so the log odds ratio is 0.113 and his standard error 0.0229 and a Chi-Square 24,6 far above the critical value 3.8
