Movies relation to Movie Theaters in Cincinnati Area

Movie Theaters have changed throughout the years and they seem to have a prescription of becoming less popular so the goal of this article is to see if that is true and if the movies in the theaters have an effect on the theaters themselves. In this I will pick three movies of different genre that came out in 2023 and compare them to two movie theaters which are Cinemark Oakley Station and XD, a chain, and Esquire Theatre, a local theater, which are both different style movie theaters in the Cincinnati area.

Movie Comparison

The movies selected are Oppenheimer, Migration and Star Wars Rebel Moon which are all different movies where Oppenheimer won best picture at the Oscars, Migration is for children and Star Wars Rebel Moon is part of a cinematic universe. The average reviewer rating according to IMDB for each of theses movies which are all out of 10 is 8.3 for Oppenheimer , 6.7 for Migration and 5.6 for Star Wars Rebel Moon. Here is a distribution of of the three movies with a box plot.

In this graph it can be seen that Oppenheimer is much higher average but also there is a larger gap in the top and bottom of the distribution. Migration seems to be very all over the place and not have a clear idea of the rating and Rebel Moon was the lowest and seemed to be what closer to the average.

Migration had the highest level of joy and positive are must higher than the other movies and it seems like that the movie was very positively reviewed and people who wrote reviews were very happy with the movie. Star Wars Rebel Moon had the highest level of negative and was almost as close to positive which is much higher for all three movies. Oppenheimer was in the middle of almost all the movies which makes sense with the distribution which it seems like the reviews are all over the place.

Theater Comparison

In this analysis there will be a comparison of two movie theaters which are Cinemark Oakley Station and XD and Esquire Theatre which are both theaters in the Cincinnati area. The data that has been collected has come from reviews on yelp. I intend to answer three questions about what the belief of people on yelp think of the theaters.

In this graph the obvious can be seen that Cinemark was opened later because they reviews start at a later date. When the first reviews for Esquire started to come in they were all very positive and took a few years before they went down. The reviews for Cinemark seem to be all over the place and have no real idea of what it should be rated. The last point is that Esquire has not revived a 1 star review. There also needs to be a view of what people are saying about each theater.

In this graph the first look at negative and positive and it is clear to see that people have more positive opinions about Esquire and more negative opinions about Cinemark and the difference between both is similar. It is also interesting to note that people fear but also trust Cinemark more than Esquire which seems that it could contrast each feeling. The biggest difference is the amount more of surprise that people have for Esquire. It seems that people have feeling that do not really make sense and do not go with each other that negative and positive.

Ratings Change

In this we need to look at the the movie theaters for the times the three movies were in theaters which are the four weeks after the release date because that is the average movies stay in theaters and movie theaters do not keep records of when the movies are in theaters so this is the best way to view it. Oppenheimer released July 21 2023 which means it would to August 21 2023, Migration released December 22 2023 which means it would to January 22 2024 and Star Wars Rebel Moon released December 15, 2023 which means it would to January 15 2024.

It seems like the movie theater did not change the reviews really and the movies that are applied did not make people review the theater more and did not change what people thought about the theater.
