Pop Culture Music Analysis
Growing up, I learned how important music is. It is a form of art that can emulate in a few words or notes how a person is feeling, whether it is sad, happy, heartbroken, or in love. All in all, music is a very universal thing that reaches so many people.
Questions
What time of the year of song releases have the most streams?
Out of female artists, male artists, and bands, who is the most popular?
Data
Spotify CSV
The data used for this analysis is focused on Spotify, the music app. It looks at songs that were popular in 2023 along with many variables that help give a full circle view of each song. This CSV has 953 observations and 24 variables that include:
track_name - the name of the song
artist(s)_name - the names of all the artists in the song
artist_count - how many artists are in the song
released_year - the year the song was released
released_month - the month the song was released
released_day - the day of the month the song was released
in_spotify_playlists - how many times the song is in a playlist on spotify
in_spotify_charts - how many times the song is on the spotify charts
streams - number of times the song was streams in 2023
in_apple_playlists - how many times the song is in a playlist on apple
in_apple_charts - how many times the song is on the apple charts
in_deezer_playlists - how many times the song is in a playlist on deezer
in_deezer_charts - how many times the song is on deezer charts
in_shazam_charts - how many times the song is on shazam charts
bpm - beats per minute
key - key of the song
mode - mode of the song (major or minor)
danceability_% - percentage indicating how suitable a song is for dancing
valence_% - positivity of the music content
energy_% - energy level of the song
acousticness_% - amount of acoustic sound in the song
instrumentalness_% - amount of instrumental in the song
speechiness_% - amount of spoken word in the song

Summary Statistics of the Data
Below is showing the statistics of stream data to get a better understanding of what we are working with.
Analysis:
Here we can see the that the average amount of streams is 513,855,968 with a spread of 566,625,774 as we can see with the standard deviation. This also shows us the range of streams to put the future analysis into perspective with the minimum streams in this data set is 2,762 and the maximum is 3,703,895,074. Additionally, we can see that at the middle of the pack is 290,228,626.
Question 1: How does time of the year affect streams of songs on Spotify?
First, I wanted to look at if streaming platforms like Spotify have increased the popularity of older songs.
Analysis
Through this visualization, it is clear that older songs aren’t streamed nearly as much as newer songs, however, it is interesting to see how far back Spotify has songs.
I also wanted to look at the month a song was released in and how It related to the most streams on average.
Analysis
Through this visualization, we can see that songs released on January have the most streams on average which logically makes sense as they have the entire year to collect streams. Outside of January, May has the second most streams on average.
Furthermore, I wanted to look at the day of the month that songs are released to see if that affects its streams.
Question 2: Out of female artists, male artists, and bands, who is the most popular?
Female Artist Comparison
To start to answer the question of who is more popular I looked at specific female artists’ songs of Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, Miley Cyrus, and Billie Eilish and their total streams. I created a separate function look for these specific artists due to the high volume of songs in this data set as well as the popularity of their music. With this, I was able to create a filter for these specific artists.
Analysis
Here we can see that out of the most popular female artists, Miley Cyrus has the most streams at 943,685,385 and it is significantly higher than the other female artist she is being compared to with the next highest streams being 420,398,896 less than Miley.
Male Artist Comparison
I, then, looked at male artists’ songs of Kenrick Lamar, Eminem, The Weeknd, Frank Ocean, and Harry Styles and their total streams. Using the same strategy as the female artist visualization, I was able to create a function that filtered out these specific male artists based on the volume of songs.
Analysis
Here we can see that out of the most popular male artists, Eminem has the most streams at 1,545,951,399 and it is significantly higher than the other male artist he is being compared to with the next highest streams being 731,633,001 less than Eminem. In comparison, Miley has 602,266,014 less streams than Eminem.
Band Comparison
I, then, looked at bands’ songs of Arctic Monkeys, Imagine Dragons, OneRepublic, and Radiohead and their total streams. Using the same strategy as the female and male artist visualization, I was able to create a function that filtered out these specific male artists based on the volume of songs.
Here we can see that out of the most popular bands, Imagine Dragon has the most streams at 1,757,494,883.3 and it is significantly higher than the other bands that they are being compared to with the next highest streams being 208,929,982 less than Imagine Dragons. In comparison, Miley has 813,809,498 less streams than Imagine Dragons and Eminem has 211,543,484 less than them.
Metacritic CSV
To further look at the comparison between female artists, male artists, and bands, I web scraped an album review cite called Metacritic. I collected data from 11 pages which include more than the top 1000 songs according to the user scores. I was able to collect:
album_artist - artist of the album
album_title - album name
album_rank - where the album is placed based on user score
album_summary - summary and explanation of the album
user_rating - album user score
release_date - the day the album was released
Looking at female artists’ albums of Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, Miley Cyrus, and Carly Rae Jepson and their specific user ratings. I created a separate function look for these specific artists due to the high volume of albums in this data frame as well as the popularity of their music. With this, I was able to create a filter for these specific artists.
Through this visualization, we are able to see that Lana Del Rey’s album “Do You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd.” is the highest rated female artist album at 9.4 The majority of her albums are 9 or above with the exception of her “Ultraviolence” album that is at 8.8. Additionally, we can see that Taylor Swift is probably her biggest competition with her ratings being consistently close to 9 ranging from 8.9-9.2.
Male Artist Comparison
I, then, looked at male artists’ albums of Kenrick Lamar, Eminem, The Weeknd, Frank Ocean, and Hozier and their specific user ratings. Using the same strategy as the female artist visualization, I was able to create a function that filtered out these specific male artists based on the volume of albums.
Band Comparison
Finally, I looked at bands’ albums of Radiohead, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, and My Chemical Romance and their specific user ratings.
Analysis:
Through this visualization, we are able to see that Radiohead’s albums “In Rainbows” is the highest rated band album at 9. The remaining albums are standing around an 8.8 or 8.9, but nothing above a 9. This is the same as the male artist’s comparison.
Final Comparison by Looking at Emotional Sentiment

To put it all together, I wanted to look at the Rolling Stones reviews of the top three artists’ recent albums. I collected data that includes:

Analysis:
Here we can see that the reviews of each artist vary by emotional sentiment. Eminem has the highest score for negaitve and positive with negative being slightly higher. While Eminem is at the top for nearly all the words, Miley beats him out for anticipation. The words that are considered more negative are the ones that have high scores for Eminem as a whole.
Conclusion
In summary, songs released in Januray on the 1st day tend to be streamed a significant amount more than any other month and day. In terms of artist comparison, bands tend to be streamed more than male or female artists, but they are rated lower while female artists are streamed less with higher ratings.
