Relationship between public respect for police, and crime rates over the years.
Crime rates in Australia have steadily declined. In 2019, crime rates
were a mere 70% less from what they were in the year 2001 which was when
it had reached its peak. The data that is now present indicates that
Australia is now safer and secure then it has ever been. The police
having implemented new enforcement strategies, community outreach
programs as well as other factors such as an ever evolving social
dynamic are all factors as to why crime rates are at an all time
low.
The crime rate being as low as it is should be reflected via how much
respect police get from the general public. Whilst this is evident from
some states today, we can observe that some states still maintain a low
level of respect for police over the years, despite observing lower
crime rates in multiple areas such as theft, burglary, violent crime and
road death toll. Below are two charts. the first chart shows public
respect levels from 1988, the second explores public satisfaction from
2014 in comparison to 2022.
The following graphs depict various crime rates over the years per
100,000 civilians. Here you can find rates for burglary, theft, violent
crimes as well as for the road death toll rate.
