For a data set of your choosing, make a faceted plot using the trelliscopejs package. You may make any type of plot; scatter plot, histogram, etc. but, as mentioned in the discussion below, you must explain why you chose this plot and what you are investigating about the variable you are graphing.

The trelliscope plot must include one cognostic measure of your own. Include a description of what it is and what information this measure gives.

Description 2-3 paragraphs.

Describe the data set. Explain the variable you are graphing in your plots and the reason you are investigating with it. Discuss the reason/motivation you chose the variable to facet on, and what insight or trend you are attempting to investigate. Discuss any challenges you had in making the graphs and how you dealt with these challenges. Name at least one cognostic measure (this can include the cognostic you created or be different) the reader could investigate, and explain any insight they might gain from it.

Description: One cool feature of Spotify is that it lets its users download their own listening data. I have been a Spotify user since 2019 and that is the data that I decided to use for this assignment. I had already cleaned the data in Python for a prior Analytics Club event, but I saved the cleaned data as a csv and read it into R. In this dataset, each row corresponds to a single time a song was listened to. Each row contains the song title, artist, album, and how many minutes the song was listened to (min_played). The main goal of these graphs was to analyze how long I listened to some of my favorite songs. Instead of selecting, which songs I listen to in Spotify, I tend to skip to the songs I enjoy. This makes me curious to analyze how many times I skip songs as opposed to listening to them the whole way through. While there is no analytical solution I’m trying to find from this, my motivation is to explore my listening habits to learn more about my taste in music and subconscious behavior of skipping song. I’m curious to see if there are specific songs that I skip more than others, how often I skip songs, and are there any songs that I skip part way through. I analyzed this through the use of trelliscope and histograms.

To begin, I grouped my dataset by song title and filtered out any songs with less than 125 listenens. This left me with 177 songs that would be considered my “favorites” by the number of listens. After that, I made histograms of the minutes played for each song, to analyze how many times I skipped a particular song compared to the number of times I listened to a song in full. When looking through the graphs, I found that there were only 8 songs out of 177 included that I listened to in full more times than I skipped. That means that for 169 of the songs that were graphed, I tended to skip them more than I listened to them. One challenge that I faced when making my graph was deciding what to facet on. My dataset also contains a column called “reason_end” that denotes the reason why the song ended (ex: forward button, back button, track end, etc.). I used trial and error, faceting on this column as well, but ultimately decided to leave this facet out of my graph due to some complications with the data that I had not noticed during my data cleaning. Sometimes the data has track end listed as the reason_end, but had minutes played significantly less than the length of the song. Due to this unforeseen issue and not knowing what caused it, I decided to not facet by that variable. An option for further analysis could be analyzing the issues with that column and fixing them to see if it helps with faceting.

I also included some of my own cognostics in the trelliscope graphs. The first one is called early_skip and this displays the number of times that I listened to 20 seconds or less of a song. This is helpful to determine how many times I skipped a specific song (assuming that listening to 20 seconds or less counts as a skip). For comparison, I also added a cognostic called full_listen and this is the number of times that i listened to 2.5 minutes of a song or more (assuming that listening to 2.5 minute means that I listened to the full song or at least a good majority of the song). Comparing the values of early_skip and full_listen help to show concrete values that represent the visuals in the histogram. Also for comparison, I added in a cognostic for the total number of listens that each song had (regardless of how long I listened to the song). This helps to see the proportion of the number of times that I listened to a song fully or skipped after a short amount of time.

Note: you can add a url directly to the text and it will be active in the html (and word document if you knit to that)

Example: https://www.google.com

If you want to be fancy and make your url active text, you can do this
