Filter the dataset

Remove the StateDesc that includes the United Sates, select Prevention as the category (of interest), filter for only measuring crude prevalence and select only 2017.

  filter(Category == "Prevention") |>

The new dataset “Prevention” is a manageable dataset now.

For your assignment, work with the cleaned “Prevention” dataset

1. Once you run the above code, filter this dataset one more time for any particular subset.

Filter chunk here

unique(latlong_clean$StateAbbr)
 [1] "AL" "CA" "FL" "CT" "IL" "MN" "NY" "PA" "NC" "OH" "OK" "OR" "TX" "RI" "SC"
[16] "SD" "TN" "UT" "VA" "WA" "AK" "WI" "AZ" "AR" "CO" "DE" "NV" "DC" "GA" "ID"
[31] "HI" "MA" "MI" "IN" "KS" "KY" "IA" "LA" "MD" "ME" "NH" "NJ" "NM" "MO" "MS"
[46] "NE" "MT" "ND" "WV" "VT" "WY"
# Filter the dataset for entries from Maryland (MD)
subset_prevention <- filter(prevention, StateAbbr == "MD")

2. Based on the GIS tutorial (Japan earthquakes), create one plot about something in your subsetted dataset.

First plot chunk here

# Create a scatter plot
ggplot(subset_prevention, aes(x=PopulationCount, y=Data_Value)) +
  geom_point(aes(color=PopulationCount), alpha=0.5) + # Use color to represent population count and adjust transparency
  scale_x_log10() + # Apply's logarithmic scale if population count varies widely, without it the you could not see the data easliy
  labs(title="Relationship between Population Count and Data Value",
       x="Population Count",
       y="Data Value (%)",
       color="Population Count") +
  theme_minimal() +
  theme(legend.position="none") # Remove legend if color scale is not needed
Warning: Removed 4 rows containing missing values (`geom_point()`).

3. Now create a map of your subsetted dataset.

First map chunk here

ggplot(data = subset_prevention, aes(x = long, y = lat)) +
  geom_point(aes(color = Data_Value), alpha = 1) +  # Color points by Data_Value (health indicator) and adjust transparency
  labs(title = "Geographical Distribution of Health Indicator",
       x = "Longitude",
       y = "Latitude",
       color = "Data Value") +
  theme_minimal() +
  coord_fixed(ratio = 1)  # Keep aspect ratio to 1 to avoid distortion

4. Refine your map to include a mouseover tooltip

Refined map chunk here

leaflet(data = subset_prevention) |>
  addTiles() |> # Add default OpenStreetMap map tiles
  addCircleMarkers(lng = ~long, lat = ~lat, # This is going to add dots with the city, data value, and population when you hover over them
                   popup = ~paste("City:", CityName, "<br>",
                                  "Data Value:", Data_Value, "<br>",
                                  "Population:", PopulationCount),
                   radius = 5, fillOpacity = 0.8, color = "#007bff") # Sets how big the dots are, how transparent they are and what color they are.

5. Write a paragraph

In a paragraph, describe the plots you created and what they show.

For this assignment, I filtered the prevention data set to only have the state of Maryland which only had the city of Baltimore in it. I then made a scatter plot taking the data value percentage of that area and then I also took the population so we could see if the higher the population had more data value but as you can see they are not relevant to each other. You can also see that there is no data from around 25% to 50% so it makes me wonder why. I then made a map using a scatter plot taking the longitude and latitude and then I colored based on how high the data value is in each area. I then used leaflet for the first time and made a map having the points highlighted on the map and if you hover over it, it will tell you the data value percentage and the population of the area.
