The new dataset “Prevention” is a manageable dataset now.
For your assignment, work with the cleaned “Prevention” dataset
1. Once you run the above code, filter this dataset one more time for any particular subset.
Filter chunk here
unique(latlong_clean$StateAbbr) [1] "AL" "CA" "FL" "CT" "IL" "MN" "NY" "PA" "NC" "OH" "OK" "OR" "TX" "RI" "SC"

[46] "NE" "MT" "ND" "WV" "VT" "WY"
preventionMP <- prevention %>%
filter(prevention$PopulationCount > 400000)2. Based on the GIS tutorial (Japan earthquakes), create one plot about something in your subsetted dataset.
First plot chunk here
options(scipen=999)
ggplot(preventionMP, aes(x = lat, y = PopulationCount, color = PopulationCount)) +
geom_point() +
scale_color_gradient(low = "#FF0000", high = "#3333FF")3. Now create a map of your subsetted dataset.
First map chunk here
leaflet() |>
setView(lng = -95.7129, lat = 37.0902, zoom =6) |>
addProviderTiles("Esri.NatGeoWorldMap") |>
addCircles(
data = preventionMP,
radius = (preventionMP$PopulationCount)/85,
color = "#ff0000",
fillColor = "#ff000a",
fillOpacity = 0.25
)Assuming "long" and "lat" are longitude and latitude, respectively
4. Refine your map to include a mousover tooltip
Refined map chunk here
popupPreventionMP <- paste0(
"<b>Latitude: </b>", preventionMP$lat, "<br>",
"<b>Longitude: </b>", preventionMP$long, "<br>",
"<b>Population: </b>", preventionMP$PopulationCount, "<br>",
"<b>Location: </b>", paste(preventionMP$CityName, preventionMP$StateAbbr, sep = " "), "<br>"
)
leaflet() |>
setView(lng = -95.7129, lat = 37.0902, zoom =6) |>
addProviderTiles("Esri.NatGeoWorldMap") |>
addCircles(
data = preventionMP,
radius = (preventionMP$PopulationCount)/85,
color = "#ff0000",
fillColor = "#ff000a",
fillOpacity = 0.25,
popup = popupPreventionMP
)Assuming "long" and "lat" are longitude and latitude, respectively
5. Write a paragraph
In a paragraph, describe the plots you created and what they show.
Many sources online quoted a large city as one with a population above 400,000. The plots I created show the geographical location of large cities that fit that criteria inside the US. The largest populations reside near or on coastal areas, likely due to them being large port cities that can supply a steady economy. These plots serve to show the lack of cities in the northwest region of the US as well. My first scatterplot also shows that the majority of US cities are based near the 35 parallel (latitude)
