During this investigation you will be examining the heart rates of 130 subjects in a study. Our goal in this investigation is to apply the tools we have learned in class in order to summarize the distribution of heart rates.

Part I: Describing the distribution

  1. Using the data provided, use a histogram to plot the distribution of heart rates for the 130 patients in the data. Put this histogram in its own sheet and name it HRChart. Does this distribution have a specific skew? or is it symmetric?
  2. We are interested in measuring the center of the distribution. Use the appropriate function in google sheets to calculate the mean of the distribution, as well as the standard deviation. Label these clearly in your sheet.
  3. Next, calculate the 5 number summary and clearly label each in your sheet.

Part II: Do males have the same body temp as females?

  1. Create two separate data sets for males and females using the filter function. Put the male data in another sheet named ‘MaleData’ and the females in another sheet named ‘FemaleData’.
  2. Calculate the mean and standard deviation for both males and females separately in their respective sheets and label each clearly.
  3. Is there any evidence that the sexes have different mean body temps? Justify your answer.
