Today we’ll work with two datasets. The first dataset is about the pharmacokinetics of theophylline (a caffeine-like substance found in tea and chocolate and used as an anti-asthmathic drug).
You can download the dataset on CANVAS.
First, open the dataset using a basic text editing software (wordpad, textedit, or better: sublime text or textwrangler). The file is in the csv format.
Question 1: “csv” is an acronym. What does it stand for?
“csv” files are simple text files. We like simple, so from now on we’ll only be using csv-formatted data.
Question 2: What differences are there between a “csv”” file and an “xls” file?
The second dataset is named Iris.csv.
Have a look at the column headers of both datasets and wait for your instructor to tell you what they correspond to.
In Excel:
Question 3: Create a nice graph showing how the theophylline concentration varies in relation to time. Different subjects should be represented with different colors.
Question 4: Create a graphs showing how sepal lengths vary among iris individuals.
In R:
Wait for your instructor to show you how to do the same graphs in R.
IMPORTANT: take notes throughout lectures and labs!!
