1.1 How many cases were included in the data?

From the lecture, we know that nrow(dataset) is used to count the amount of observations in a data set. In this case, we are counting cases in the data set from the three species of Iris flowers. We can also confirm this by knowing that there were 3 species and 50 flowers of each species, or just by looking at the last numerical value in the rows.

In total there are five variables, but only four numerical variables included in this data set. These numerical variables are sepal length, sepal width, petal length, and petal width. As we can see from our output, these four variables are always followed by numerical values.

These are examples of continuous variables since the possible values in these ranges are infinite.We use the str() function so we can see the structure of the data, displaying the common variables used. We can also use “df <- iris” which is the data frame for this data set, and the output shows in the environment tab. This allows us to then easily look through the entire data set.

1.3 How many categorical variables are included in the data, and what are they? List the corresponding levels(categories).

As we discussed in this last question, we were looking at numerical variables. There is only one categorical variable in the iris data set. That is Species as seen above. The categories are listed as setosa, versicolor, and virginica.

Using the summary() function, this allow us to see the descriptive statistics for this data set. As we can see here, this shows us mean, median, etc.. for each of the numerical variables
