Replication of Chandra and Heizlsperger (2023)

Summary
This report replicates Figures 1a and 1b from Chandra and Heizlsperger (2023)1 and presents similar analyses looking at trends by occupation and tenure. To replicate the paper I use the CES, to look at occupations and experience I use the CPS.
1 Data
Chandra and Heizlsperger (2023) use data from the Current Employment Statistics (CES) program, administered by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), from March 2006 to June 2023 for outcomes such as employment and total hours worked. In Figure 1, they present time series for different industry segments, namely, physicians offices, hospitals, nursing and residential care facilities, and non-health care.
The first step to replicate their figure is to identify the corresponding time series in the CES. I download the data from here https://www.bls.gov/ces/data/ using seasonally adjusted series and the following NAICs for each of industry segment: physicians offices, 6211; hospitals, 622; nursing and residential care facilities, 623.2 For non-health care employment, I use the total non-farm series and subtract the sum of the health care industry segments listed above. For non-health care total hours worked, I use the total private series (there is no total non-farm option for this variable) and also subtract the three health industry segments of interest.
