Founded in 1971 in Seattle, Starbucks had 36,000 stores worldwide as of 2022. While the company does not detail those locations, data site Kaggle has a list from 2017 scraped by Chris Meller.
Following is a searchable table showing the locations in the Kaggle dataset, available on GitHub.
Some 53 percent of stores are in the United States. Next most is China, with 11 percent, followed by Canada with 6 percent.
However, those figures are misleading unless population is considered. The following chart normalizes for population by computing the stores per 1 million residents. To avoid small countries skewing the data, only nations with populations of at least 1 million were measured.
The following table pulls United States locations from the larger data set.
Top 10 States Per Capita
As with the global data, U.S. locations should account for population to enable fair comparisons. California has the most Starbucks stores, but it also has the highest population. Calculating per 100,000 people produces more enlightening results.
Florida Cities Per Capita
Similarly, Florida locations have been normalized for population. The following chart shows the cities with the most stores per person, among cities with at least 50,000 people.
