I would say that the positives of this data set is the amount of Information it has. The data set contains detailed information from countless of counties from New York from 2010 to 2016. This amount of data allows us to make a comprehensive analysis and understanding hate crime trends. I would also say the another positive is that by including specific information such as what specific group was being targeted we are allowed to see what communities are most vulnerable to hate crimes. A negative I would say is the short amount of time this data has been recorded in. This data set only ranges from 2010 to 2016, which may not capture recent trends or changes in hate crimes trends. For example I could say in 2020, we saw in increase in hate crimes against Asian people due to the pandemic, but we are not able to see this in here. A broader time frame would also allows us to see long term trends in hate crimes. Another negative I see is that this data may never capture multiple types of discrimination faced by victims or represent the multiple identities of a victim . For example we can say that a victim is a transgender lesbian women, but in this data set the victim would have to stick to one identity either being transgender or lesbian.
A path I would like study would be the severity of the hate crimes committed, it allows us to see the trend of which communities seem to face more violent hate crimes. Another path I would like to study would be how hate speech or discriminatory language in social media, such as twitter, instagram, and facebook would relate to real life hate crimes committed.
After seeing the hate crime data set I would like to make a bigger data set that covers the whole united states counties and cover even more years (2010-2024). Another thing I would like to do is see the trend in hate crimes committed here in Maryland.
