1.1 Enrollment Headcount
Over the past six years, MCCD has
maintained an average annual enrollment of 16,939 students. The impact
of the global COVID-19 pandemic led to an 11.4% decline in enrollment
from the 2019-20 to the 2020-21 academic year. Encouragingly, there was
a 7.4% increase in enrollment from the 2021-22 to the 2022-23 academic
year.
1.2 Enrollment by Ethnicity
At Merced College, the
student population is notably diverse, comprising 63.71% Hispanic,
17.67% White, 8.23% Asian, 3.40% African American, and 3.40%
multi-ethnic and so on. In comparison to the national average for
associate colleges, there is a distinct difference in the Hispanic
population, where Merced College surpasses the national average of
35.71% with an impressive 63.71%. Additionally, the White population at
Merced College stands at 17.67%, contrasting with the national average
of 28.35%races

In the 2022-23 academic year, a total
of 746 Associate Degrees for Transfer (ADTs), 770 Associate Degrees, and
1,250 Certificates were conferred to students. Among these, the top five
programs that students were awarded in are Interdisciplinary Studies,
Psychology, Social Sciences, Business and Management, and Engineering
and Industrial Technologies.
Merced County
Unemployment
Due to the impact of COVID-19,
unemployment in Merced County surged to 11.35% in the year 2020.
However, as of December 2022, there has been a significant decrease,
with the unemployment rate now standing at 7.25%.
Education Levels
In 2021, approximately 71.4% of
Merced residents held a high school degree, 22.4% possessed a college
degree, and 14.6% attained a bachelor’s degree. Notably, there has been
a consistent upward trend across all three educational levels in recent
years.

The percentage of workforce growth
reflects the variance in available jobs compared to previous years. In
2021, the top-growing occupation was “Art, Design, Entertainment,
Sports, & Media” with a notable growth rate of 60.56%. This
signifies an increase of 367 jobs in the market compared to the figures
recorded in 2020.
Job Availability
In 2021, the occupation with the
highest number of job openings was “Construction & Extraction
Occupations,” presenting a significant 987 opportunities. Following
closely, the “Education Instruction & Library Occupation” secured
the second position with 421 job openings.
Industry
As illustrated below, in Merced
County, the median income for males surpasses that of females across all
industries, with Information Technology being the only exception.
