The following data is downloaded from the MA EEA Data Portal for CSOs. Data in the portal extends backwards to mid-2022. Precipitation data is acquired from USGS gage at Fresh Pond, near Alewife Brook.
The CSO discharges on Alewife Brook are untreated: raw sewage makes its way directly to the stream. The CSO discharges on the Mystic River, while larger, are treated or partially treated CSOs.
Alewife Brook is the scene of the largest untreated CSO discharges in the Mystic Watershed. 2023 was a year in which many high-intensity storm events, expected to increase with climate change, drove high frequency and volumes of Alewife CSOs. CSO discharges to Alewife Brook in 2023 totaled 27,811,000 gallons in 45 events.
